10 minutes to Kyoto Station
Very old hotel, small rooms but staff has good service.
I stayed in this hotel cos is five minutes away from my mom-in-law house. But rooms is small for 5 stars standard.
Restaurant Tip : Near kyoto station where they have lots of cheap restaurant at the basement.

Cleanliness and friendliness of staff. Free shuttle service to railway station.
Breakfast was too expensive in the restaurant. Shuttle bus not well advertised, so we walked from the station on first day.
The Rihga Royal Hotel Kyoto is a lovely Hotel in the main centre of Kyoto. It is well placed, just a short distance from the railway station and its Shinkansen high speed trains. The rooms are very well appointed and spacious with a good range of quality toiletries. The whole place is spotlessly clean, and the rooms are well serviced. I would rate the hotel as being 5 star, when compared with other 4 star hotels I have stayed in. Overall, the best hotel we stayed at in out tour of South Korea and Japan.
Shopping Tip : Use the free shuttle bus that runs every 15 minutes, to go to and from the Railway Station where there is a large complex of shops, restaurants and department stores.

Free shuttle bus from JR station till 9 pm, great for transport with luggage. Location within 10 minutes walk from station if choose to. Room size is OK for Japanese standard. Clean.
Air conditioner is set at fixed temperature. Was there in Dec. the A/C was blowing heat and cannot get cool air can only set low or high blower. Pillows need better ones, its hard expected softer and fluffier.
To cool the room I have to open the window ( locked for opening of 5 cm only) but was confronted with notice from trains passing. Lots of eateries near JR station and all buses to tourist locations start from there. Staff friendly and spoke English. Except for the temperature control, value for location, room size, cleanliness.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Use the shuttle to JR station for all bus connections to tourist attractions and also near Airport Limo or use Airport Express train.

Free transfers from the Train Station
Breakfast can be a bit too crowded and difficult to get a place .. have to queue a while to be seated
The hotel charges if its a one bed althou had requested for a bed but was given two single beds. There are two choices of breakfast venue. The international one is a long queue and may have to wait for sometime during peak time. They have good transfer to the Central Train Station and one can take a slow walk to the station as the queue may sometime take a while. Overall good espcially with rate it is going for!!
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Kyoto is a beautiful city ...

Travel tip : We took a cab tour rather than a formal bus one. We say two major temples, the national museum and a lot of the city - only a third of the cost to take cab from train station to sites. To save money, we did not eat at hotel, but rather at train stations or outside restaurants. Also bought tea and nescaf to make coffee and tea early in the morning - because nothing is open early.

Handy to many sights and close enough to the train station.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Easier to catch a taxi to the tourist attractions. Not expensive and less confusing than the train.

Restaurant Tip : We didn't see any coffee shop in the immediate area around the hotel but across from the station on the corner is a Starbucks and in the station all kinds of fabulous choices to eat and get coffee or dessert.

If the Gion district is in your itinerary you can walk it which takes about an hour (I did it once) or take the #206 bus at section D2 at Kyoto station. Costs 220 yen for an adult and 110 for a child.
Hotel Feature Tip : The hotel is only a long block from Kyoto station. They have a shuttle bus that runs every 15 minutes and picks up and drops off at the south side of the station and takes 8 minutes. Best way to walk it is go out the north end of the station toward Kyoto towers, make a left at the main street which will take you west and at the end of the block the hotel will be across the street toward the left.
