Affordable: not like I heard Ryokans were supposed to be

Goes with the territory, I assume: not a soft sleeping surface.
We enjoyed an affordable Ryokan stay at the Watazen. Good location in central Kyoto near Gion and many, many restaurants within 10-15 minutes. The baths are nice and hot, and we were enthusiastic about the staff and the breakfast. The futons are not all that thick, and so we slept a little less well (even though we like hard mattresses).
Shopping Tip : Nishiki Market is terrific.

Space, location, English speaking staff.
Food tends to be expensive. Although there is plenty of restaurants nearby.
The hotel is not very close to the subway as it is in the middle of a quadrant. However it is within walking distance from Gion. The staff is very helpful and speak English. My wife and I stayed in this ryokan and it is a good way to experience the ryokan type of hotel essential when visiting Kyoto.
Shopping Tip : The shops in the market are good!!!
