West of Tokyo Station and Marunouchi, the Imperial Palace is one of the most important sites in the country. It was built over the site of the Shogun Tokugawa’s residence in the late 1800s.
The Imperial Palace is still home to the Imperial family, and the nation’s 125th emperor lives here today. This is favorite attraction for tourists in Japan, but visitors are limited in what they can see. The grounds open to the public once in December and again in January. Otherwise, the only way to get access is to join one of the daily guided tours. These have to be booked at least a day in advance, which is easily accomplished through hotels near the Imperial Palace.
A more modern attraction is the Koishikawa Korakuen Garden, a beautifully landscaped plot dating to feudal times.
Booking accommodation near the Imperial Palace is convenient for tourists who plan on sightseeing, but it can also be convenient for business travelers who have meetings scheduled in Marunouchi financial district, which is immediately east of the palace. Public transportation is routed through the adjoining Tokyo Station.
