Location to Ueno train station, distance to food and services, great English-speaking staff, nice lounge area with computers, books and a fully-functional kitchen.
The beds aren't very comfortable, the dryer is terrible, and the rooms are very small.
The hotel is off the street, which minimizes traffic sounds. The staff greets you at the desk and is very helpful with information on ATMs, train schedules, etc. Their bulletin boards of local events is updated daily, and also included day-trips and a few standard touristy places to visit. The rooms are pretty small, but well-stocked with a TV, drawers, slippers and robes. Checkout was easy, and they even provided a set of cables for our laptop to use their internet for free. Overall, a great value and a wonderful experience.
Restaurant Tip : There is a great Indian restaurant on the same block as the hotel, open very late at night. They also do takeout, and the food is excellent.

Friendliness of the staff, staff speaks good english and helpful
Had a short stay in the hotel for just only 1 night but nevertheless i was amazed by the friendliness of the lady staff of the hotel. Left a baggage in the lobby overnight and the staff helped me to keep it till the next day when i checked out. The hotel is also located very near to the subway with just 5 minutes on foot.

Helpful staff, great location, clean, secure, has all the basics you need.
This was my first time in Tokyo. Obviously it's an expensive city, and I wanted to save as much money as possible. Looking at many hotels, Oak Hotel seemed the cheapest but still looked decent. While it was still expensive compared to SE Asian standards (where I'm from), the hotel still exceeded my expectations compared to the photos. The staff were extremely helpful. Would recommend to anyone who is looking to save a
little money and wants a safe/convenient place to stay. I stayed in a single private room and really loved it as a basic home to sleep in and feel safe.
Nightlife Tip : Go to Asakusa area and grab some sake in a traditional japanese bar. Great for people watching!

Hard bed & pillow, not enough orientation of the facilities available when you checked in.
The instructions on how to find the hotel on the Oak home page are pretty good and we found it eventually with relative ease. It is a little walk (big walk, especially with bags without wheels)from Ueno station. The staff had very good english skills (good for us as our japanese is not good)and were very accomodating & friendly.
Our room was a semi double, it was the smallest semi double ever and was way too small for the two of us. After being at other hotels with semi doubles and having plenty room, this was small small small, wouldnt recommend it for two people. There was a semi double next door to us that was vacated and it was much bigger than our room, we contemplated asking to change to that room. But we thought to ourselves, we are only sleeping in it, so it sufficed.
The mattress was the most uncomfortable & hardest i have ever slept on and had a dip in it on one side and the pillow was just as uncomfortable and hard. We discovered from other visitors that their mattresses & pillows were hard & uncomfortable.
The location was brilliant and this outweighed the hardness and smallness of it all. I would stay here again but would not get a semi double.
Hotel Feature Tip : It gets hard to try and get a computer to check emails etc, we found we had no trouble getting on it early morning between 6-8am.

Location (very close to a Tokyo Metro station - Inaricho and relatively close to a big train station, Ueno).
Good Internet connection.
The air conditioning system.
Nice hotel, with friendly and helpful staff. Oriented towards budget travelers, but it provides good value for money, with good room amenities. Good daily room cleaning service (including the provided yukata).
An area where the hotel needs improvements is the air conditioning system, which is located at mid height and can be uncomfortable.
Also, the good Internet connection is worth mentioning and some other facilities, like a common kitchen and washing machine.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Located close to Asakusa, you can enjoy a pleasant evening stroll towards Senso-ji.

Great rate, Close to Subway Station, Free internet
Small room, Long walking distance from JR Station
The room is small but clean and good enough, worth your money. A bed for two is almost the same size as that for one available in other hotels.
Good location, the hotel is quite easy to find, especially from Subway Station. (It cost JPY 160 for one way trip from that Subway Station to JR Ueno Station if you have JR Pass and don't want to walk from the hotel to JR Station.)
Staffs are very friendly.

- Front desk staff speaks fluent English
- Many foreigners stay there.
- Offers free internet in the lobby
- Easy to walk to from Ueno station
- Cheap price
- VERY UNCOMFORTABLE BED. Hard.
- Room had a strange smell
- No, screen on the window. So, couldn't let fresh air in the room without worrying about mosquitoes
- Seems worn and old
When I first entered the lobby, I felt reashured at seeing a foreigner behind the counter who spoke fluent English. No, communication problems at this hotel. Also the lobby had many friendly poloroid pictures displayed of guests who had stayed from many countries around the world. There was a computer in the lobby and an information board with maps and fliers about Tokyo in English. I had the distinct impression that this hotel was made for the budget foreign tourist in mind.
Then I steped in the tiny, dirty elevator and assended to my room. Stepping in the room I was met with a fowl, musty odor. I tried opening the windows, then realized there was no screen on them so mosquitos would get in if I opened the window. So, I turned on the air conditioner. Atleast that worked. The room looked rather dingy and dark and well lived in.
I took a walk around the neighbourhood and it was like a ghost town. All the shops were borded up early and the only thing to do was to walk to a convience store. Rather disapointing neighbourhood.
Back in the room, I tried to sleep on the bed. I was tossing and turning with back pains because of the UNBELIEVABLY HARD bed.
All in all in was an uncomfortable experience. Although it is easy for foreigers to access, I was left with an impression that there are MUCH better options available in a HUGE city like Tokyo at a similar price range.
Go elsewhere.

convenient location
very friendly staff
free Internet
bad insulation. i stayed on the first floor and could hear conversation in the kitchen...
i stayed there only one night for a stopover. The amenities were very basic but i found everything i needed. There were free broadband connecton in the room but also PCs available in the lobby, w/ Skype phones for international calls. I thought that was an especially nice touch. I liked the hostel vibe, and The location is great, although it's still a bit of a distance from the Ueno station. I was able to walk to the Asakusa Temple in about 20 - 25 minutes and enjoy a pleasant afternoon before i hop on my flight to New York.

- friendly & helpful staff
- internet is free ! in the room with your own notebook or at PCs near the reception
- near "ginza-line" & asakusa-area
- affordable
- drink machine at reception area
- small room if you have two suitcases (it's tokyo!)
- no food available, only snack-machine
the oak hotel perfectly fitted our demands. it was clean, we had a boiler, a fridge & a flatscreen-tv and at the reception we could find lots of helpful suggestions for our 1-week-trip, such as the ghibli-museum in mitaka, mount fuji tours or other sightseeing possibilities.
in the end they took a picture of us and pinned it to their wall which had already atleast 100 photos on it...
very nice & friendly people there, check it out ! :)
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : tokyo has a lot to do for you ! you better be prepared ! :)
heirokuzushi - nice sushi very affordable (omotesando)! garlic restaurant "ninnikuya" (ebisu)! ooedo onsen monogatari with fishpedicure (telecom center)!

A bit far from Ueno sta. (700m)
The hotel is a bit far from Ueno station (700m) the nearest subway station is Inaricho (Ginza line ~100m) Room is a bit small but provide sufficient amenities. Sometimes air con works like a heater so I'm sweat in the middle of the night. So impressed with staff that they can speak English fluently and very helpful. There are many local & chain-restaurants around such as Yoshinoya, Sukiya.

superb location, the free extras
absence of breakfast option
Looking for a hotel that is not too far away from a railway or metro station was one of the key points for selecting a place to stay. In fact, it is just 700m from Oak Hotel to Ueno station's airport line. It can't get much easier. For a hotel this close. Compared to a hotel of the same price range and location at home in Germany, Oak offers additional free extras: a cup or two of tea, hygiene (toothbrush, razor, etc.), and of course internet access in both your room and the lobby. TV is limited to a few Japanese channels however. Silent air conditioner is included. (Bath-)rooms may come a bit small, but then again, that is just what I expected and wanted to experience. The single-bed room has more than enough space for a solo traveler.
The hotel reception staff speaks English very well and can help you with about anything.
Breakfast was not included, but that is not much a problem as there are plenty of stores, shops and eateries around. You will also find international franchises; not needing to mention McDo, Subway Sandwich restaurants (at European quality!) are available at a few select locations. Knowing basic Japanese language is tremendously useful, as people outside the hotel often do not know English.
Overall, I was very satisfied and would come again.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : There is a Statue of Liberty south of Rainbow Bridge near the Odaiba Shopping Mall.
