space, lovely space... the second floor rooms have breathtaking views of the river, garden and koi ponds. free shuttle to the city centre. food at the restaurant is very good.

no wifi access

i stayed at the grand on my last day in luang prabang. having stayed near the center for a week, i wanted to just enjoy being away from it all and it is so peaceful and quiet at the grand. make sure you enjoy the pool and eat at the restaurant. i was the only one for dinner and lunch yet i had the superb fine dine service.

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : it is not so far with the shuttle service and to ensure you get your fitness doze, just rent a bike and cycle to the city center.

The rooms with the river view were great, a beautiful ambience that was relaxing and pleasant.

The location is very inconvenient and the shuttle service is not nearly frequent enough nor flexible by even one minute.

Having not read the information about the hotel as carefully as I should I chose this hotel based on pictures and a couple of comments. The hotel itself is very nice, the ambience is wonderful, most of the staff are very friendly and helpful; and the food is very good. The room was pleasant however the water pressure in our shower was intermittent at best. Definite need to upgrade the water service. Also, the hotel location is less than convenient. The pool is beautiful but there are no toilets located near the pool, it is quite a hike to the nearest one. This would seem to encourage some less than sanitary habits by pool users. Altogether for hotel with great potential it is a mixed bag of treats. Some were great, some were less than... The food was good, I love the way they fix the scrambled eggs with onion and tomato in them. So much better than the usual bland eggs.

Without doubt the best feature of the hotel is the view over the river and the gardens. The staff were very friendly, helpful and polite but i suppose that is what you get to expect from Asia.

Breakfast was limited and not the normal buffet style but this could have been due to the lack of guests staying (we were out of season). I sure if we'd asked for another plate of food they would have provided it.

After leaving a busy life behind in London, the Grand Hotel and Luang Prabang was the ideal first stop to start winding down and relaxing. The hotel is 2-3 km out of town and we hired mountain bikes to cycle into and around the town rather than use the hotel bus service. A gentle cycle into town together with local school children was good fun and great to see more. Luang Prabang is not a noisy town at all but staying slightly outside made it more quiet and relaxing and it was lovely getting up each morning to the views across the river. Would def reccomend this to friends who do not mind having everything on your doorstep

Restaurant Tip : Tamarind restaurant had a special set menu on the Friday night, my wife and I shared this with a very pleasant Spanish lady. The food in this restaurant was probably the nicest we tasted in Luang Prabang

Silence away from downtown, good view of Mekong River, beautiful garden, fantastic swimming pool, relaxed environment, decent room

A few kilometers way from downtown, limitted number of hotel shutles to and from downtown, high cost of tuktuk (4-5USD to downtown!),

We had a great stay at Grand Hotel. We booked this hotel, fully knowing it would be a bit away from the downtown and hotel shuttles would not be so convenient as written by other reviewers. If the purpose of your trip is rather to relax in an open environment than to walk around to see and shop all the time, this hotel is a great place to stay. Hotel shuttles were only 6-7times/day to downtown and 4-5times/day to the hotel, but we could always ask extra shuttle service for 2USD/person. The hotel also had a rental bike for 2USD/half day or 4USD/day. Or else use tuktuk for 4-5USD/trip. A room was not fantastic but good enough and clean (it looked much older than on the web pictures), overlooking a beautiful, well-maintained garden on the Mekong river. It was very peaceful environment without much noise of tuktuk, cars, and people. Deluxe room did not come with bathtub, but shower room was spatious enough with abundunt supply of hot water, which did not run out! And swimming pool was quite good with good view of mountains and with quite few ppl. Overall, it was a good stay, and we would like to come back to the hotel next time also.

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : this season is quite hot and sunny in Luang Phabang. It is recomendable to enjoy your time at the hotel til 3-4PM, then go out for sightseeing in downtown afterewards (the town is quite small anyway). There are hotel shuttles at 9 and 10PM respectively from the post office, so you can still come back without worrying about tuktuk.

The grounds are beautiful There is a very nice Mekong River View. Very nice staff many actually speak English.

Out of Town with very few schedule bus trips in or out. Not a secure premises. Hotel has 24 hour manned lobby with safes but none in rooms-guessing they were stolen. Room is really simply bed (hard) and TV...difference between luxury and plan seems only to be foam throw pillows and bed runner...

Luang Prabang is a backpacker's one/two night stay. The town isn't much...out of town there is nothing... I felt unsafe in my room at night, even put the chair under the door knob. Woke the next morning to find that next door was a construction site...day laborers sleeping over...I really was not safe. The next room offered had twin beds...they were put together and a queen mattress put on top, much more comfortable but the queen was smaller than the 2 twins-strange planning. There is one internet connection & one computer in the lobby. I could hook up my computer but the price ($1 every 15 minutes) was the same. Breakfast was very uninspired...not even local teas or coffees were available... The staff, oddly, was vastly superior to their sister hotel, the Maison S, in town.

Restaurant Tip : Jumo is a great place to sample local teas, coffee, Pa Dutch pies, huge sandwiches . It is beautifully run by an American woman from Pennsylvania named Debra. Also, 2 immaculate western bathrooms.

excellent service, nice staff great ambiance sumptious breakfast

Only one computer for guests for internet connection, $2 per 15 minutes. We prefer to book hotels with wifi in rooms or at least in lobby. Urge to improve this service

We liked our stay in this hotel. The rooms are spacious with a nice balcony with view on the beautiful garden and the Mekong River. There is a scheduled free transport to the old city and to/from the airport for $2 per person. The staff was friendly and most helpful. A place to return to!

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : The old City of Luang Prabang is on the world heritage list of Unesco and is a must to visit. There is a night market on Saturday evening

Location at Mekong River is very beautiful, breakfast at river terrace is very nice. The old building with the beautiful garden has great charm.

The rooms and especially the furniture could need some renovation. The hotel's location is rather far from the town.

We have had a very pleasant stay, the service was very good, we were even moved to a great downstairs apartment without extra cost when we requested a downstairs room because of back trouble of one of us. The only slight problem is that you sometimes have to take the (free) hotel shuttle to town as it is sometimes difficult to get other kind of transport; the hotel shuttle should have more rides to town around lunchtime. Also the chairs in the garden could be more comfortable. Nevertheless, this was our second stay in the hotel and if we return to Luang Prabang we will stay there again.

the beautiful gounds, the swimming pool. restaurant terrace overlooking the mekong. Great service - smiling people

a real hitch on the last morning which was a shame as everything had been wonderful up till then. we checked out the night before at 9 pm, paying our hotel bill in full. we had an early morning flight and were due to take the 6.30 am shuttle when the front desk decided we owed a further $l5.13 this was the exact amount of a lunch we had already paid the night before. however, the driver wouldn't take us until this further $l5.13 was paid even though we had our international flight to catch. we had no opportunity to debate the matter but had to fork over even though we had already paid the bill in full.

A beautiful hotel in the most beautiful setting. the terrace restaurant overlooks the mekong river so sunrises and sunsets are just spectacular. service is great, rooms are lovely with ponds stocked with goldfish right outside your own patio. shuttle is fine but would be nice to have more returning from town. that said it only costs $2 approx by taxi from town so its no big deal. lazy hours can be spent by the great swimming pool. only annoying thing was we checked out and paid our bill at 9 pm the night before as were due to take an early morning flight. next morning the front desk said we owed another $l5 which they had forgotten to charge us. we argued up and down but they were adamant we had to pay it and as we needed the driver of the shuttle to take us to the airport we would have missed our plane had we spent anymore time. definitely wasn't the way to end a holiday and left a bad taste in the mouth. such a shame.

Hotel Feature Tip : the bike rental was great. we cycled to the waterfalls which was quite hard but got a taxi back for $3

Nice atmosphere, pleasant poolside, even if the water is too cold to swim.

Amenities

The water was brown the first night we were there, there was no hot water. We were supposed to stay three nights, we stayed one. At the price for the most basic room, the hotel charges $25 on top of that for a cot for a 3-year old. Don't even ask what wifi costs. Frankly, for Vientiane, the cost is ludicrous.

Great Staff. Very good food. Comfortable rooms. Peaceful surroundings.

Hot water really wasn't. Not within walking distance to the main part of town.

The Grand Hotel is set in peaceful surroundings and is run by a young, very friendly and helpful staff. The hotel is located some distance from "down town", but the hotel mini van makes numerous shuttle trips. The on site restaurant serves excellent Lao food as well as traditional western breakfasts with that wonderful Lao coffee. The hotel also overlooks the Mekong River. The rooms are comfortable with simple furnishings and are cleaned daily. The only down side was the lack of HOT water. Since we were there during a cold snap and the rooms have no heat a truly hot shower would have been nice. That aside, we were there for 5 days and never once thought of moving. the hotel also has internet service[just don't expect it to be fast].

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : The hotel staff easily arranges any private tours you would like

view and gardens.

noise.

great view, wonderful position on the river, efficient and friendly staff, quality bicycles for inexpensive rental ($4 per day), but limited dining possibilities, and frugal buffet breakfast. The major problem with this hotel is noise - it is poorly constructed with no attention paid to sound transmission between rooms. Unless you are lucky to have neighbours who are naturally quiet people, good luck on getting a peaceful night's sleep - we stayed 3 nights (Dec 25-28) and did not get any. sound carries extremely well between rooms, and you may get to know your neighbors without actually meeting them.

Quiet and has a good view of the Mekong; unfortunately my room only has partial view Rooms are comfortable.

Too far from town. The exterior of the hotel needs a fresh coat of paint; it looks like a run down old barrack. Quiet but verging on eerie. Set breakfast can be improved; its too basic.

Very unique setting by the river with very generous landscaping and greenery. Rooms are well laid out and well kept.

Quite some distance away from the town centre.

We had a fairly nice stay here and enjoyed the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. Breakfast laid out at the restaurant next to the river was pleasant with reasonably good spread. Although shuttle service to the town centre is provided, using a tuk tuk for transport to and from the hotel outside the scheduled time is the only option if one needs to go to town.

Grounds on which hotel is situated.

No WIFI, no tea/coffee, empty mini bar, very far from centre.

No WIFI and you must pay for a slow connection at reception, no tea/coffee in room, empty mini bar in room, breakfast food all located outside with lots of ants, hotel very far from centre, unreliable shuttle bus service, charged us for airport transfers after firstly stating that it was free, not great value for price you pay.

Restaurant Tip : Lots of really nice guesthouses located in centre near restaurants, markets & bars.

View of Mekong, spacious rooms, helpful staff, beautiful pool.

Location, breakfast.

My stay at The Grand Hotel in Luang Prabang was an incredible experience. Upon arrival our reservation was not on file and we were immediately upgraded for 2 of our 5 nights to their Executive Mekong Suite for the inconvenience. Rooms were clean and spacious, and I would recommend getting a river view. The Pool was immaculate and the surrounding grounds were beautifully manicured. The location of the Grand is off the beaten path, so if its privacy you're looking for look no further. But if you do enjoy spending time on the main strip be aware that you are going to have to do a lot of travelling. The hotel offers 6 free time designated shuttles, 2 in the morning, afternoon, and evening. All other times require you to pay $2 US per person. The only true con I have was the breakfast. Of all the hotels we stayed at during our SE Asia trip, this one offered the least selection.

Hotel Feature Tip : If you are looking to have a beautiful view of the Mekong River, be sure to ask for a second level room in block 7.
