To far from town, charged for a local tourist map, charged $1 USD for 15 min's of net (no wireless or room access)when everyone else has provided for free. Food was ordinary, Bar was never open and aircon to noisy.
I did not like our stay. They charged us $1 USD for a local tourist map of the town, there was no room access to the web and only 1 computer in the foyer which they charged $1USD for 15 min's access. The food was ordinary, the wine was off. The aircon in the room to noisy to use. The overal location and buildings were nice - however would not return.
Restaurant Tip : Do not eat at the hotel

Spacious, wonderful grounds, a fantastic piece of history for Lao that one can stay in and learn. Fantastic pool. Great location on the edge of the Mekong.
Perhaps a bit far for those who want the daily 5AM wake up call of the local monasteries. A great holiday hotel, but a poor business hotel with not so hot internet access.
The spacious, wonderful grounds, a fantastic piece of history for Lao that one can stay in and learn. This was the main appeal when we first booked our rooms. Though a bit far from town compared to other historic hotels the set up was wonderful and had all the peace and quiet we wanted. A fantastic pool set off to the side with plenty of sun for those sun worshippers. The dining area had a great location on the edge of the Mekong where it was a real treat to have breakfast and dinner.
Travel tip : The town is small so where ever you stay it is easy to get around. The boat ride for 4 hours on the Mekong was a very relaxing trip and gave a new perspective to the region.

*Quiet and peaceful
*Beautiful pool
*Helpful and friendly staff
*Great views from rooms
*Power and water went off occasionally
*Shuttle buses good but could have been more regular
*Breakfast needed more variety
After working hard in Bangkok for several months, I needed a quiet, relaxing getaway....where I could please myself. The Grand in Luang Prabang provided exactly that.I could have lazy days by the pool or just reading on the balcony and enjoying the view over the Mekong River. When I wanted a day out, staff were very helpful and organised everything...van,tour, guide. The nights in the town were great meeting up with other travellers and trying the local food. I found many bargains at the Night markets and the people were very relaxed and not pushy or pesky. The bonus tour of the Morning markets, after giving sticky rice to the monks, was an eye opener with unusual items for sale. Both the monks and the morning markets were well worth the effort of getting up early. Thank you to the two friendly and informative guides from the hotel.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Be sure to go to the waterfalls....a lovely day out.
Climb the mountain in the middle of town.
Go back to the Night Markets more than once....different items for sale.
There ARE a few ATMs in town...even though the guidebooks say there are not.

- The huge compound of the hotel gives you plenty of space to explore around the area
- Wonderful view of the Mekong River at the restaurant
- Peaceful and quiet
- Slightly further away from town but compensated with shuttle services to town provided by the hotel at designated times
- There is a museum in the hotel that you get to visit and spend some time there
- Emergency procedure briefing would be good to be included at registration
- Food was nothing extraordinary compared to places in town
Grand Luang Prabang gives you a sense of serenity once you walk in thru the reception. The lanscaping of the hotel is wonderful with greenery and ponds around the guest rooms. You will enjoy spending some time in the hotel for a quiet break and sipping a cup of coffee overlooking the Mekong River. There is also a bar that you can have drinks after dinner with a unique ID and comfortable setting for guests to chat and catch up. The swimming pool is also away from the guests room providing more privacy. Overall the room is comfortable and spacious and definitely a place to find some quietness in your vacation.

Quite a way out of town, expensive extras
The grand is a good hotel that is clearly marketed towards the upper end of the pricing scale - all goods and services are priced in dollars and are quite expensive. Due to the distance out of town, though hotel does do regular transfers you're a bit stuck if you want to go on your own schedule.

This is a wonderful hotel, quiet and relaxing.
Can't think of anything that really needed improvement, except maybe filling a couple of pot holes in the driveway which is nitpicking!
This is one of the lovliest hotels I have stayed in. Not the most modern maybe, but with a wonderful 'feel' to it. The staff are all so friendly and helpful and nothing is too much trouble - on arrival we were invited to sit at the main desk and give over the usual information while we were served warm (lemon grass I think) tea with pineapple and frangipani flowers. The hotel is situated just out of town on the Meekong River, so it is beautifully quiet. The hotel runs a free shuttle service to and from town at various times (also a courtesy but to and from the airport if you book). We often took this bus to town, then caught a tuk tuk back. You should be able to bargain the price down to 20000
kip - about AUD$3 (we got 'stung' the first time for 50000 but got him down to 40000). The breakfast is excellent as was the restaurant in the evening. The restaurant overlooks the Meekong as do most of the rooms. Air con worked well, and there is also a ceiling fan and a mini bar which actually gets cold! The grounds are beautiful, many ponds with fish and waterlilies. The swimming pool has its own attendant with towels and cold drinks available.
Travel tip : There is a great cooking school at the Tamnak Lao Restaurant in town. The all day (10-4.30) is the best value at around A$30. You get a tour of the local market, lunch, early dinner hands on lessons and an insight into the people. Also good was the 1/2 day elephant trek, which includes a long boat trip up the Meekong to some of the most amazing waterfalls - take your swimmers! They picked us up and returned us to our hotel. The guide spoke quite good english and pointed out places of interest along the way. They have longer tours available and was operated by Tiger Tours which I booked over the net. The street and night market in town was also very interesting. The pace in Luang Prabang is very slow, the people are beautiful, and the scenery is outstanding. The flight from Bangkok is about 2 hours. I just loved this place and will be returning.

the minute we drove into the grand we knew we were in for a treat. welcoming staff, beautiful surrounds and a wonderful ambience. our first floor room overlooking the mekong was stunning and very well appointed. the beautifully landscaped new pool, surrounded by tropical garden and mountains made swimming and relaxing poolside a lovely experience. the meals we ate at the grand were all beautifully prepared and delicious. our first encounter with lao people has meant that we can't wait to return.
perhaps a clothes rack in the room that could be put on the balcony for drying clothes. shuttle service could perhaps be improved? maybe a guest survey for preferred times?
our stay at the grand was a very happy and memorable experience. we travel frequently in south east asia and this is now one of our preferred destinations. the staff here are exceptionally friendly and helpful. the gardens and riverside location make it a very special place
Shopping Tip : shopping at the night craft market was a shoppers delight. we purchased 3 beautiful hand made quilts. posting them home was the major expense.

quiet, off-the-beaten-track, riverside, lush environment
a bit far from town center, although I've found the shuttle service to be quite adequate, furnishings in the room are a bit old and basic -- no safe. breakfast was basic too.
It's the kind of place where you'd feel comfortable staying in.

Gorgeous grounds, excellent pool, breakfast buffet + coffee
Location outside of luang prabang, a bit run down and service could be better
The grand luang prabang is a gorgeous property that appears to have been a 5-star place in another lifetime but has slipped from there to be merely pleasant. The locations outside of the city was more inconvenient than we expexcted going into the stay- the hotel does run fairly regular shuttles but we found we would have preferred to be walking distance from the town's many bars and restaurants. Food at the xieng keo restaurant is excellent. The staff could probably stand a bit more hospitality training- we asked for a slightly later check out and were refused even though the hotel was practically empty. Overall a good stay but not reaching the potential it could.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Kuang si falls, fairly short trip from the hotel were a highlight

pool, breakfast, grounds, view
Amazing hotel. This hotel has an incredible pool, and a great complimentary breakfast. This hotel used to be the home of one of the princes of Laos. It has incredible grounds and sizeable rooms which are always very clean. There is a service which takes guests to town multiple times throughout the day. This hotel is really a great value for your money. You won't find a hotel of this level for such a low price.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : After seeing Luang Prabang take a trip outside of the city to the waterfalls, they are incredible.

space, lovely space... the second floor rooms have breathtaking views of the river, garden and koi ponds. free shuttle to the city centre. food at the restaurant is very good.
i stayed at the grand on my last day in luang prabang. having stayed near the center for a week, i wanted to just enjoy being away from it all and it is so peaceful and quiet at the grand. make sure you enjoy the pool and eat at the restaurant. i was the only one for dinner and lunch yet i had the superb fine dine service.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : it is not so far with the shuttle service and to ensure you get your fitness doze, just rent a bike and cycle to the city center.

The rooms with the river view were great, a beautiful ambience that was relaxing and pleasant.
The location is very inconvenient and the shuttle service is not nearly frequent enough nor flexible by even one minute.
Having not read the information about the hotel as carefully as I should I chose this hotel based on pictures and a couple of comments. The hotel itself is very nice, the ambience is wonderful, most of the staff are very friendly and helpful; and the food is very good. The room was pleasant however the water pressure in our shower was intermittent at best. Definite need to upgrade the water service. Also, the hotel location is less than convenient. The pool is beautiful but there are no toilets located near the pool, it is quite a hike to the nearest one. This would seem to encourage some less than sanitary habits by pool users. Altogether for hotel with great potential it is a mixed bag of treats. Some were great, some were less than...
The food was good, I love the way they fix the scrambled eggs with onion and tomato in them. So much better than the usual bland eggs.

just beautiful ! the location, architecture, nature, decorations ! BEAUTIFUL
no cons would go back anytime
This is a beautiful place outside of Luang Prabang, just a short ride away from temples and sights. The nicest part is the secluded location, right on the river in a beautiful setting. We went in June and were almost the only guests, but even in high season can imagine it will be nice and you will never have the feeling of a crowded place.
A nice pool is also available and food is superb.
