Vientiane
Made famous by the wealth of activities in the city and the natural surroundings, Vientiane is the capital and top destination for Laos. Streched out on the North Eastern bank of the Mekong River, contains a wide range of Vientiane accommodations that will suit the taste (and budget) of any traveler.
The most populous city in the entire country, Vientiane is still surprisingly spacious and free of congestion that fills many other cities. However, it is important to note that despite being the largest city, the population barely exceeds 200,000. The city itself is far easier to navigate than other, far more heavily populated cities of South East Asia, despite a general lack of signage.
Due to the fact that the city was a protectorate of the France until the 50’s, there is a still a great deal of French influence in the city including the language, customs, and succulent French culinary delights. Fans of French bread and baguettes will have no trouble filling their bread needs as this is popular with the locals as well as travelers to the area at one of the many street side cafes.
There are many Wats (temples) in the metropolitan area including Wat Si Saket, which although being sacked in 1828, is the oldest standing temple in the region. It has largely been transformed to a tourist destination but still contains the religious significance that originally was intended.
Within one or two hours from all the accommodations in Vientiane is a wealth of activities including white water rafting, kayaking, trekking, and the famous (particularly among backpackers) lazy river tubing down the Mekong with many stop offs for zip-lining across the river.
