Taipa / Cotai
Most of the hotels in Taipa / Cotai are moderately priced and appeal mostly to mainland Chinese tourists who are more interested in gaming than sightseeing or museum-hopping. There’s a limited selection of posh resorts here, but developers promise many more in the next few years.
Taipa is part of an island separate from the Macau Peninsula. It was mostly rural before the 1990s, and it lacks the historic appeal of Macau City. Instead, Taipa focuses on modern casino development. Accommodation in Taipa is run in conjunction with Casino Crown Macau, Casino New Century, and Casino Taipa. Tourist attractions are limited to Carmel Gardens, Jockey Club and Macau Stadium.
Cotai occupies a strip of reclaimed land. Ongoing development projects ensure there will be more hotels in Cotai in the future. For now, it’s best known for hosting Casino Venetian. This larger-than-life casino is one of the world’s biggest, and the Venetian theme includes indoor canals and gondolas. Cotai also has the Karting Track, Caesars golf course and Macau East Asian Games Dome, both of which cater for Chinese tourists.
For international tourists, the Taipa and Cotai areas are best known for hosting Macau International Airport. It’s located off the eastern shore, and it specializes in low-cost flights that compete with Hong Kong International Airport. Macau city center is about 10 kilometers away and can be reached oversea via Ponte da Amizade Friendship Bridge.
