Cameron Highlands
A little more than 130 miles north of Kuala Lumpur is the Cameron Highlands, an extensive hill station once favored by British colonials during the hot season. Development started shortly after the highlands were mapped in 1885, and these rolling, forested hills quickly became one of the finest getaways on peninsular Malaysia.
Tourists continue to come for an escape from life in the lowlands. The cooler temperatures of the Cameron Highlands are ideal for growing tea, strawberries and roses, and there are beautiful gardens to explore here. Rustic hotels in the Cameron Highlands can arrange jungle walks and treks to local lookout points. Gunung Brinchang, the highest peak in the area, can be hiked with a guide or independently.
The relaxed pace of life in this hill station is contagious, and tourists quickly see the value of taking it slowly. After a day spent exploring a Hindu temple, strolling through a tea plantation or visiting a butterfly farm, travelers can head to an English-style pub and indulge in some hearty British food.
The most important town in the Cameron Highlands Region is Tanah Rata. Many of the best chalets and hotels of Cameron Highlands are found here within walking distance of colonial architecture, tea plantations and Robertson Waterfall.
The local roads continue to improve, and a new route from Ipoh recently opened. The most convenient way to get here is to rent a car in Kuala Lumpur or Ipoh, but express and VIP buses are also available. The drive from Kuala Lumpur takes between four and five hours and brings travelers through some beautiful territory.
