Luxurious hotel in a gorgeous setting
The service, pool and beach
9.7
I stayed here with my wife for 2 nights after climbing Mt Kinabalu. It was the perfect way to rest my weary legs! Relaxing by the pool and at the beach was the best way to recover.
There are many restaurant choices here including international (both casual and fine dining options), Japanese, Indian and local Malaysian cuisine. All are within easy walking distance of the rooms. We actually stayed in and ordered room service on the first night as there was quite a wide variety of food available on the menu and it came very promptly.
The grounds are impeccable and the view of the beach is amazing. I didn't see any other resorts nearby so the only people at the beach were Shangri-La Hotel guests. I'm not sure if it's actually a private beach, but it certainly felt that way. There are even deck chairs and umbrellas setup on the beach for guests!
I have stayed at a few Shangri-La hotels/resorts and the service here was up to their usual high standards. The internet is super fast unlike most hotels I've stayed at. There are also some programs available for kids so it's very family friendly. We also did a short tour to see the orangutans as there is a rehabilitation centre there (my wife loves animals!). The cost was 55 ringgit. There's also a canopy walk available for an additional 15 ringgit but we did not do it.
The only minor concerns I had with this resort was that it's very far from Kota Kinabalu and the airport (almost 1 hour by taxi) so there are no shopping or eating options here other than those offered at the actual hotel. That means if you are after a cheap eat or decent shopping, look elsewhere.
Also, we stayed in the Garden Wing which is very family and kid friendly. However, if you would like a quiet, romantic getaway, you are better off staying in the Ocean Wing. It's a little bit more expensive, but more secluded and I believe that the separate pool there is for Ocean Wing guests only.

Friendly, helpful & very efficient staff, the nature reserve

We had one of the best holidays that we have had. We particularly went to view the Orang Utans and we weren't disappointed. The amenities are great and the service is fantastic. A big plus too, wi fi throughout the entire resort.

our stay was lovely. 6 nights at this resort is exactly what we needed to unwind. The staff made us comfortable at all times, the food was amazing and overall it was a good choice. They definitely live up to the Shangri-La legacy

2 minute walk to the beach, clean rooms
High speed wifi, large and clean rooms, beach view
7.7
Room was pretty clean compared to the photos on the official website. We didn't have high expectations looking at the website, but fortunately the room turned out to be much better than the photos. The hotel may benefit from a homepage update, and get a professional photographer to come up with more decent photos for the website.
Wifi provided was outstanding, no need to re-authorize your iPhone every time you try to connect. It stays connected wherever you go, even at the pools and the beach!
Breakfast buffet included had a wide variety but quality was somewhat disappointing, for example the fried eggs were over cooked. A five star hotel should offer much better food than that.

Fantastic place to see rehabilitated Orang Utans
Orang Utans, various dining options, well kept beach fromt

Our stay at the Rasa Ria resort was short but excellent. We were able to see Orang Utans in the rehabilitation centre, and the birdwatching excursion around the golf course was fantastic. There are plenty of activities for all ages.
