unfortunately as wonderful as the hotel was and the location couldnt have been better...the service throughout the hotel, other than the front desk, was terrible...some of the worse service any of the four of us occupying two rooms have ever had at any hotel in any country and we all travel quite extensively due to our jobs. i have been at cheap no fuss motels that offered better service than our experience at this particular shangri la. i would not be inclined to ever staying at this location again, and frankly it has made me rethink my decision to continue staying in this brand again, which is pretty sad. we did try to get our concerns addressed, however, the resident manager only chose to address one of the two rooms. big failure on his part.
Hotel Feature Tip:
dont expect to find only adults in the adult only pool...not only are children allowed...unsupervised children are allowed to use the jacuzzi beds as a shallow splash and play area and the life guards couldnt have cared less.

Hotel is very well maintained,the staff is friendly and service orietated.
the children likes the pool and the view from the beach is very beautiful, especially at sunset.
the ffod in the restaurants is more expensive than in regular Malaysian restaurants but very good.
The hotel is fairly close to the airport, which was an advantage since we left very early in the morning.
There is no disturbance from the airport because the planes take off and land in a different direction.

The hotel was great, big rooms with patio. Had a relaxed vacation with my family. The children enjoyed the water slides and the pool. The hotel personnel were very accommodating and very helpful.

our family came in for one evening prior to traveling to sandakan area for 3 nights, then returned for another 3 nights at the shangri la tanjung aru. upon our return, the hotel had all of our information already filled out so check in was a breeze. the rooms were lovely and spacious and our view of the sea was very nice. the sunset bar was awesome!! we made use of the gym which was large and well equipped. the food at cocoa joes was quite good and the wait staff there was fantastic to us. my daughter enjoyed a wonderful afternoon at the spa and we both enjoyed our mani/pedi at the nail bar. the breakfast buffet was extensive. i would definitely return to this hotel.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
Take the time and effort to travel to Sandakan to see the amazing wildlife.

Great hotel, wonderful break from reality.
The hotel was very nice and clean. The food was good, the service was great and the location is so close to the airport as well as the marina if you are looking to visit some islands.

I stayed in a room with my parents, the staff brought in an extra bed right away and the room was plenty big enough for all 3 of us. We enjoyed our time very much, we all wished we could stay a few days longer!
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
I went on a day trip to one of the islands, all arranged by the hotel. The snorkeling was fantastic and everything went as planned. I only wish my parents had joined me but they spent the day lounging by the pool with their books and had just as nice of a day as I did!

A lovely hotel. We stayed twice in the fortnight. Kids club is fantastic. The second weekend was Easter and the service was a fair bit slower and not as good. If you opt for club class be aware you don't get a huge amount for your money unless you make it up in wine and nibbles between 5 and 7
Restaurant Tip:
Buy water etc from the gift shop it's three times cheaper than poolside

we have just come back from a 6 night stay and had a wonderful time, our 4 year old daughter loved the kids pools and slides, us adults enjoyed the beach and adult's pool. the staff's service was out of this world, all staff smiled and said hello anytime they saw us. they went the extra mile after our daughter had a visit from a local doctor they delivered cookies and milk to her with a card get well soon! room serivce was easy and quick and the buffett breakfast and dinners were amazing!! we would go back again in a hear beat. 10 out of 10 from us. thanks
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
Take a visit to see the Orangutan's at the Rasa Ria Resort (the other shangri-la) it was well worth it!!

Lovely hotel in a beautiful setting
The Infinity Swimming Pool, Sunset Bar and friendly staff

The best features of the hotel were the outdoor Infinity Swimming Pool, which was fabulous, and the Sunset Bar, which truly offered stunning views of the sunset every evening. We also found the buffet resturant provided good quality food at a reasonable price. The personal waiter service, especially around the pool, was particularly good and the staff were always friendly and happy.
On the down side, we found the bedrooms to be a little shabby, particularly the carpets, and in need of some refurbishment. Also, hotel prices in general were quite expensive, especially the price of drinks. In addition, the main facility missing from our stay was water sports, which was not readily available in the area.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
The island boat trips are highly recommended, as the beaches were lovely and not crowded, and the sea was beautifully clear with great snorkelling.

The staffs always working slow and look like lazy. The house keeping service seems without standard of quality. Everyday with different quality and standard! Almost everyday with missing of items, like tissue paper, shower gel, shoes and many other items. No welcome fruits since arrival.
