Chinatown
At the center of Kuala Lumpur is lively Chinatown, a district known for its colorful shopping and entertainment scene. The district centers on Jalan Petaling, a bustling commercial avenue. It runs north-to-south through the district where it hosts the best shops and hotels in Chinatown.
Central Market, also called Pasar Seni, lies between Petaling Street and the Kelang River. In the past, it dealt mainly in produce, but the scope is broader now. Tourists come here to pick up handicrafts, replica designer goods and antiques. They can also head to the Annexe on the second floor for anything from cultural exhibitions to book signings. Pasar Seni LRT station adjoins the market.
Other shopping centers in Chinatown include Kota Raya, S & M Warisan and UO Superstore. None of these venues are as popular or glamorous as their rivals in Mid Valley City or the Golden Triangle, but they’re great for bargains. Each of these complexes has been recently renovated.
Most of the accommodation in Chinatown fronts Petaling Street. As the defining attraction, Petaling Street has the best selection of merchandise and restaurants, and it’s one of the likeliest places to find tourists in Kuala Lumpur. Cheap and authentic hawker food is widely available.
Because of its central location, Chinatown is a favorite place for tourists to be based while visiting Kuala Lumpur. It’s especially popular with backpackers and budget travelers, who make use of the Maharajaalela monorail station and Plaza Rakyat LRT station for getting around town. The Puduraya Bus Terminal, operating services to the LCCT airport and to long-distance destinations like Penang, Ipoh and Kuala Kangsar.
