Hotel standard room is small but adequately furnished. Ask for level 3 and above for smoke-free corridor and rooms. Staff is friendly but not clear about agreement. When I wanted to shorten my stay, the receptionist told me that merdeka palace hotel does not refund any early check out as agreed with Agoda. This is not true. Agoda gave refund for early check out with the hotel. Since I was not given the correct information from merdeka palace hotel and hence experienced some inconveniences.

Nice Italian restaurant with good ambience.

i would say that the hotel is in serious need of an upgrade as it is certainly showing signs of wear and tear. it is located right near the indian shopping street and not far from the waterfront, both are in walking distance.
Nightlife Tip:
Be careful when walking alone at night, use taxi's and negotiate a rate before you set off or get them to put the meter on!

Upon arrival at the hotel entrance, I was blown away with the grand reception lobby area which appeared very majestic with class of luxury feeling. Check in service was fast and efficient.
I was looking forward to see if my room will give me the same impression as I had with the reception lobby. The room was clean but the wall paper were starting to peel off the wall but overall the room was good and clean. Hot water for bathing was no issue as it came on fast so it was an enjoyable time showering.
Buffet breakfast was good even though there is not much of a variety of spread to choose from.
I am pleased with my 2 night stay at this hotel.
Restaurant Tip:
i would recommend those who love seafood to go to a seafood centre called topspot which is on the 6th floor on a carpark. prices are reasonable. you can ask for direction to this place at the reception. it was a 10 mins walk from the hotel.

Very pleasant and memorable with a very good security. Easy access to town center whereby you can just go on foot to the heart of Kuching old city centre. Very near to many historical sites and place of interest.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
Very close to one of the earliest church in Borneo St. Thomas Cathedral and Bishop House at McDougall Road.

I thought they have bathtub, but receptionist asked me for double price i paid to change familly room. Agoda information also indicate that there is bathtub, its big diapointment.

My family and I quite happy with the hotel except that there were no cooking utensils provided. We were not able to make simple breakfast since we were travelling with toddler and baby. We even have to request for other kitchen utensils to be sent to us instead providing it in the room.
We also experienced a black out for approximately 3 hours on our first night of stay. We were stuck on the 15th floor (lift not working) since there was no generator available, for those hours in darkness. Imagine if the duration is longer.
A bit inconvenient if travel by car. We need to make one big turn to come to the lobby. A back entrance for car should be provided. There were no facilities provided for wheel chair and stroller if cars were parked on the upper side. No easy access for babies, disabled and elderly.

The outer look of the hotel does not show that this is a 5 stars hotel. Their hospitality service is excellent. The facility in the room is superb especially the electronize remote control that controls the entire lights in the room. The location is very strategic as it is close by to all the shops.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
Sarawak Museum is just next to the Hotel.
