Somerset Gateway Kuching Hotel, Kuching

Best place to stay in town and yet with the comfy like home. Value for money as easy access to town centre and to most of the heritage places in town.

Overall, we are satisfied with our stay at Somerset Gateway Kuching Hotel. It is value for money and very convenient to move around to the nearest mall,internet cafe, food stalls, etc. Itis about 15 minutes walk to Sarawak River where you can take a boat ride at 530pm to 7pm to enjoy the scenery there.

The best thing about the Somerset Gateway is the Location. Everything is within walking distance - the historic sites, riverside cafe's, bars and eating places. The Hotel itself was ok for a few days stay. The roof top swimming pool was very quiet during our stay and we had the pool to ourself most of the time. I stayed in a apartment which was large enough for the four of us and had plent of space - especially the large kitchen. The rooms were quite basic but adequate. All of the rooms had aircon but were in desperate need of servicing. We spent a lot of time wedging in bits of paper in various places to try and quieten the aircon sufficiently to be able to sleep. The only other problem (which appears to be the same with other Somerset Hotels) is the breakfast is extremely poor. Breakfast time was until 10:30, but even arriving at 9am was too late to have any choice of food. The food was very basic and on all 3 days I ate there the choice was only Boiled Eggs, Cerial or bread. The hot food was always depleted and never replaced once finished. It was also dissapointing to have a coffe machine which purely dispensed hot water and using coffee sachets the same as in the room. I would expect a better Coffee service in the restaurant. Overall I would stay there again purely for the Location and room size. If there is an option to book a room without breakfast take it and spend the savings outside.
