Nice room with just the right amenities.
Could do with a better spread for breakfast.
The ironing board in my room had short legs!!. I had to prop it up on the desk to do some ironing.
The Somerset Kuching is located in an excellent location right smack in town with banking, shops and restaurants within walking distance. Checking in was a breeze. The front desk staff in attendance were friendly and helpful with my enquiries. Would visit again on my next visit.
Nightlife Tip : Walking distance to the waterfront for those seeking good food and after dinner drinks.

Great service especially the reception and housekeeping.
Ideal for family stay.
Good location with easy access to good food behind hotel and easy walking distance to shopping centres.
Food replenishment during breakfast could have been faster, otherwise menus was ample and balanced.
We will greeted with warm smiles and great assistance rendered by Miss Mary and throughout the 6 day stay.
The rooms were clean and housekeeping prompt.
The swimming pool deck at the top level captures the entire Kuching city and great for relaxation in the evenings.
Shopping Tip : Easy access to clinics, groceries and amenities and banking (OCBC Bank)

Good and friendly staffs, location is ok but not the best, internet provided, security is good
Room is quite dirty, hotel lobby at 4th floor is too troublesome, dirty and smelly basement carpark
The hotel generally has very good and friendly staffs very willing to help in all the requests that I asked for. Some good and bad instances
1. Due to very loud music on the 1st night and could not sleep well and asked staff for change of room. My request was granted but unfortunately I had to go out at the time and therefore declined the offer. Slept in the same room the 2nd, there was no noise and therefore did not request for change of room again
2. Requests for use of internet for 3 times, all granted by very helpful and friendly staffs
3. After check out, return all keys and went down to carpark, could not get out of the carpark because I did not have the key card to open the bump gate. And worst of all, could not find anyone anywhere near the carpark or Ground Floor to help to open the bump gate. I had to go all the way up to level 4 again to get help and eventually have the bump gate opened

the staff were great. nothing was a trouble to them
the breakfast was terrible. although catering more to asian tastes there should be more western food. if anything ran out it wasnt replaced for a very long time. one morning 6.30am food wasnt even out and we had to leave after 7am with no food in sight. when we passed by later it had been supplied.
situation was quite good. although not on the riverfront it was close enough to walk to. there were plenty of food places around. staff in foyer were exceptionally good and were cheery every time we passed by. the breakfast scored a 2 out of 10 where we were concerned. bad service in bereakfast in all ways. its a shame the hotel was spoiled by this.
Travel tip : just the walks along the riverfront and the friendly people we met

The staff were very friendly and helpful. Location was excellent with a shot stroll to the waterfront area. Nice and clean, well-functioning A/Cs.
The brealkfast could have been better.
This was our first stay in a hotel booked through the Agoda website, so we were a bit unsure as to what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived, and received a warm and friendly welcome. The appartment consisted of living room plus two bedrooms and the standard was good, allthough not luxurious. The location was very convenient for shopping and restaurants. We can definitely recommend Somerset Gateway to friends.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : The Orangutan Sanctuary is a must see!

Friendly & helpful front office staff.a rather spacious studio apartment. Complimentary bottled drinking water that was reqularly replenished.
Limited choice of breakfast buffet. Very slow service in terms of replacing glasses & plates etc if breakfast is taken after 0830hrs.
A family friendly residence. Kudos to the staff who make you feel at home.Wish there's a clock in the apartment since I don't fancy wake up calls. My room on the 13th floor gave a good view of the whole city - I love it! Would stay there again if I visit Kuching.
Travel tip : Being centrally located - within walking distance to most shops and restaurants.Especially the waterfront - you could just spend the whole day there and watch the world goes by.

Amenities, Location, helpful and staff, Breakfast,
Big working fridge, large rooms
I booked a 2 bedroom serviced apartment for a total of 6 days for late September 2009. We have just recently returned from our holiday.Prior to departure I read the mixed reviews for Somerset. My family were pleasantly surprised and delighted at the accomodation. From the moment of arrival the staff went out of there way to make us welcome. Our apartment was on the 15th floor with sweeping views of the river.Up a short flight of stairs was the relaxing swimming pool area. The apartment room was big, clean and well furnished. The washing machine / dryer a godsend and a big fridge to deliver cold drinks most welcome. The breakfast was more than adequate and never crowded.A great stay.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Top Spot food Court- assessible from 2nd floor a must visit for wonderfully flavoured seafood at reasonable prices.

Value for money given the rate charge and the location of the hotel. Staff are friendly and react fast on request.

Apartment had a washing machine and tumble dryer, ideal after 3 days trekking in the mud of Baku Park
Breakfast could be a lot better
Very helpful and friendly staff, nice apartments. stayed in 2 different 2 bedroom apartments, both were furnished to a good standard. The apartment even had bathroom scales, so my friend and I could check our weight after 3 days hard trekking in Baku Park. The breakfast was the only thing that let this place down, scambled eggs were to dry, and had been placed on a bananana leaf which turned them green and made them taste funny. Bread was the sugar type white bread, very sweet. The fruit was tinned and again very sweet.

good location, near the main attractions
The variety of the breakfast could be improved.
The hotel room is clean and comfortable; Hotel is located in the city and is walking distance to the Main bazaar, Riverwalk, and other attractions. There is a TopShop Seafood Hawker Center behind the hotel, strongly recommend if you are looking for seafood at reasonable price. However, The variety of the breakfast could be improved.

Fantastic location, close to everything.
Bit outdated but acceptable.
The staff was friendly and very helpful. Great advises about where to go and what to see. Norman, the staff member was great.
We loved close position to Top Spot food court and our favourite ABC seafood restaurant. Pool is nice but unfortunately we have been able to swim only once as is closed in time we have been back from our day trips. We highly recommending trip with Jackson and Ivy - Borneo Trek and Kayak Adventure.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : We highly recommending trip with Jackson and Ivy -Borneo Trek and Kayak Adventure.

Value for money. The hotel is located centrally in the city. The room we stayed in was clean and comfortable. It had a nice view of the waterfront area and Dewan Undangan Negeri Sarawak. Breakfast was sufficient and tasted good. Free daily bottled drinking water, tea & coffee, newspapers and fresh toiletries were great. The reception staff were friendly and helpful. Provision of early breakfast for Muslim guests was a wonderful service.
Area of improvement: 1. Perhaps provide more brochures for tourists such as Kuching tourist maps and sightseeing tours at the lobby area would be useful to guests. 2. It would be nice if the dining room staff would clean up used dishes and cups off table quicker as the room is small, alternative is to have trolley designated so guests can carry their used cutleries and dishes and place it there so tables can be clear for use of other guests immediately.
The hotel room was nice, clean and comfortable. Its centralised location in Kuching city makes it a suitable base to move around the area. Breakfast selection was sufficient and the cooked dishes were nice. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Definitely value for money.
Restaurant Tip : Top Spot Food Court situated next to the hotel serves up cheap and good seafood dishes. Excellent selection of fresh fishes, lobsters, tiger prawns, mussels, vegetables etc. It is open in the evenings around dinner time and closes by 11pm daily. There is also a small Indian restaurant called Lyn's Thandoori Restaurant close to the hotel that serves nice reasonably priced Indian food albeit service is a bit slow. The Waterfront eateries fronting the Kuching River are also within walking distance (about 10 mins).

The staff at Somerset were very warm-hearted, and always ready for help. The breakfast they provided are simple but good enough. And the location of the hotel is good. You can go to the popular site within 10 minutes on foot; and due to it doesnt' stand just at the popular site, you can enjoy the quietness as well.

The staff was remarkable: Attentive, informed, friendly, genteel. The location is fantastic. Views are lovely. The city is fascinating as are the nearby parks and other areas of interest to tourists. Do not miss the amazing rooftop pool, if only for the views on a clear day.
Some rooms are in need of a splash of paint and so on. Breakfast was a bit crowded when a tour group descended. The garage smells like a sewer, because it seems to drain into one, but parking (near the door) is ample and you are only in there for a moment or two.
This is quite a decent hotel. Because we have children, we booked two rooms, expecting the two-room apartment, which turned out to be unavailable. The staff eventually moved us into one and it was a BIG upgrade (free!) The apartment was very comfortable, and the regular rooms were fine. The regular rooms are a little dingy, but clean and comfortable. Breakfast was ample, and somewhat eclectic. There was rice porridge and mix-ins, hard-boiled eggs, salad, toast, fresh fruit, hot chocolate, and more. It was not fancy, but it was plentiful and fine. I'd stay at this place again. And again. (And the price was hard to beat.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Got to Bako park. You may have to wade to the longboat on the way back, but you'll remember your visit to that magical place forever. (Then go to the other parks!)
