Equatorial is a nice, clean and well-located hotel near to various historical spots and several shopping malls. But quite a walk to Jonker street and Chinatown. The hotel is clean but room-size is small. A good-size swimming pool with kids pool as well. Overall, i will still come back to stay for my next holiday.

Some friends recommended us to stay in a little hotel or inn of local or historical atmosphere in such city like Melaka but we found this hotel pleasant and okay as we can approach these interesting places easily.

Travel tip : A new museum (three years old) is worth visiting. It is located near Jonker Street and called Cheng Ho Cultural Museum of an ancient Chinese admiral who led a big fleet to Melaka and even to Europe 600 years ago.

Hotel is good for kids, especially the pool! If i was visiting Malacca without kids I would probably try one of the guest houses in the old town that has a bit more character. It is very close to huge shopping centre, if that is what you want.

I booked a room in Equatorial only three days before arriving in Melaka, and for less than Rn200/night (about $65/night) which is a very good price for a 5-star (ok, realistically, more of a 4-star hotel). The hotel has an excellent location, just a few hundred meters from the colonial Melaka (the main tourist draw to the town), and the biggest mall in Melaka is right across from the entrance with a large Carrefour, lots of shopping and food. Taman Melaka Raya street, with more restaurants and nightlife, starts on the other side of the hotel, and the Glutton's Corner, an upgraded hawker stall center with some of the best food choice in Melaka, is a 7-8 minute stroll away. The hotel has a free parking (you need to show your room key/card) in the basement, the only problem with it is that there is no elevator from the parking to the lobby (3-4 flights of stairs). So, if you have lots of luggage, drop it off first in the front of hotel, then go park, or use the valet parking (on the same level as the lobby). The check-in was fast and painless, they have quite a few people working on it. The room was nothing exceptional, a king-size bed, a small sitting area, ample storage space. TV with about 15 channels, incl. ESPN, Discovery, etc. We did not really use it. A small balcony, ours had a great view of the swimming pool, Bukit Cina, and the Istana (it was facing north). From the Soouth facing rooms, you should be able to see the sea, the rest of colonial Melaka, the Chinatown, etc. The bathroom is large and clean, with a solid size bathtub. The breakfast has a good range of options, from fried rice, noodles, and curry, to rice porridge with a good selection of condiments, to toast, ham, sausages, to cereals, muesli, etc; eggs made any way you like them; several types of salad veggies, a selection of fruit. Proper crystal glasses/silverware, etc. The hall can get quite crowded from 9 to 10:30 (when they start closing the stations).

Shopping Tip : Malaysia is now aggressively promoting shopping tourism with mega-sales three times a year, March, May, and, I believe, December. Although we did not spend too much time shopping, we browsed the two main malls right next to the hotel and got some good shoes, home furnishings, and clothes, all 60-70% off.

Online reservation with Agoda was simple and fast. Online agent answered questions promptly and efficiently.

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : St Paul's Hill gives a great hilltop view of surrounding neighbourhood. Jonker Street Night market is a bargain hunter's paradise for local handicraft. Quaint shopfronts along a narrow street with vendors offering interesting souvenirs.

Conveniently located near the shopping area, good rooms. Good Deli and good offer past 9pm.

not near the old town where lots of good food are

Good hotel and service. Near the Markota shopping area and it is convenient if you are into shopping. A little far to the old town and eating places. If you have a car to drive around, may be that is ok. If you are into food, there are alternatives nearer the old town area.
