Pangkor Island

A small tropical island off the west coast of Malaysia, Pangkor is halfway between Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Once a refuge of fishermen and pirates, it's now a well-developed beach destination that offers low-key holidays and beautiful scenery.

The east cost of the island faces the mainland and is a continuous strip of charming villages, and beaches have clear water and near-white sand. Pasir Bogak was the first-developed beach and is the most famous, followed by Coral Bay and Teluk Belanga. Besides swimming and basking in the sun, Pangkor has remnants of colonial heritage that are worth exploring.

The 17th century Dutch Fort is an interesting attraction, and though not much of the actual fort remains, the site itself provides plenty of historical information. Batu Bersurat – the inscribed stone– is a massive granite tablet imbued with a great deal of history and local myth. Adrenalin-seekers can go parasailing and jungle trekking at Titi Gantung and Teluk Segadas Hill as well as taking motorcycle and bicycle tours.

Dining in Pangkor will appeal to those who like Chinese and Malay food, especially involving fresh seafood. The famous satay fish originated here. Pasir Bogak near the jetty is one of the most popular places for dining, swimming and watching local fisherman ply their trade.

The area is home to a wide range of accommodation options, from simple hotels to large resorts with private beaches with beautiful swimming pools and catamaran hire. Unmetered taxis (pink-colored micro-vans) are widely available, and make getting around the island easy.
