Beautiful hotel and room. Lovely breakfast and staff We spent three nights here and didnt see much of Penang. The hotel and room in particular were so comfortable and beautiful we spent nearly the entire time inside. The location is close to great food and only a block away from some great bars. Would definately recommend this hotel to anyone and will be staying here next time we go to Penang.

Loads of "character" - beautiful historic mansion, very friendly and hospitable staff - excellent home stay experience Guest rooms could use some upkeep/renovation and more thorough cleaning. Few amenities for teh price. The Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion offers a unique home-stay experience in a wonderfully restored historic building. The guesthouse has loads of "character" and the staff are very hospitable, but don't expect 5-star amenities. The guest rooms are very simple and could use some renovation.

Cheong Fatt Tze mansion has the quiet charm of the old place and a very homely feel to it. The decor and everything else, including the staff makes the place very personalized and we feel very welcomed like stepping back in time. I enjoyed most having an afternoon tea at the courtyard. Everyone should try the Cheong Fatt Tze experience! The lighting in the room is too dark although it create the nostalgia feel. Maybe a tv in the room will enhance the experience. Cheong Fatt Tze mansion is located near the points of interest in Georgetown which is a plus point for travellers interested in taking in the historical sights of Penang. It is also near to a food court with plenty of good food.
The service at Cheong Fatt Tze is great! We felt very welcomed at the place and the staff can get you anything (most of it) as requested. It does not have a restaurant and breakfast is served in the courtyard with simple menu of eggs, toast, cereal. But it is served hot from the kitchen, not buffet style which makes it a little more personalised.
Only drawback is that the room is too dim and there's no tv in the room. There also seems to be some bugs or mosquitoes that left some nasty marks on me and my family. Also, one may have to put up with the festivity charm of the place if there happens to be an event held in the place.
Travel tip : 1.There's a taxi stand at another hotel just the back of Cheong Fatt Tze. You can walk there for cab service, or the hotel can call cab for you, at no extra charge, which saves you the trip to the taxi stand.
2. Be prepared to climb some spiral staircase to get up to the room.
3. Go for the complementary 1 hour tour around the hotel, which is free for hotel guests only. But be puctual or the guide might not like you too much.
