Fascinating building; Friendly staff; Good breakfast

Loud late-night singing from venue next door; Lack of pool (or agreement with neighbouring hotels for pool use)

The Cheong Fatt Tze mansion is a delightful boutique hotel, recommended for those who are interested in staying somewhere with lots of character rather than somewhere bland with lots of facilities. This is not a hotel for those who have inflexible requirements, or if a pool is important for you. We particularly liked the building and the friendly and personal approach of the staff. The only real problem we experienced was the noise from the food hall next door to the hotel. They had singers performing on stage most nights and it was quite loud in our room (which was on the side of the hotel closest to the venue).

Restaurant Tip : The food market next door (dozens of different hawker stalls serving different types of food) was actually very good. We were cursing them for the noise they generated when we were in the hotel, but were very happy to eat there.

A 6' bathtub, a large quiet room, interior gardens, a great breakfast.

No wireless internet access, although the internet PC in the media room was fine.

For the time zone weary traveller, the greating was great. We were welcomed, escourted to our room and told about the neighborhood. The bathtub is wonderful, especially for a tall westerner. It is a full 6' long. And after a long flight from the US, it was wonderful. Loved the tour and the history of the house. A great place to stay.

Restaurant Tip : The hawker center next to the hotel is good. Remember you need to bargain with the taxi drivers in Penang ...they refuse to use the meter.

Great atmosphere. Unusual setting. Great staff. Ideal location.

Bedroom furniture rickety and old.

We would highly recommend the Mansion as a unique hotel experience. This well renovated boutique hotel provides a wonderful atmosphere to relax and rest. The staff are relaxed and helpful. We stayed five nights and enjoyed every moment. The surrounding eateries and sights are within easy reach and worth visiting.

A total change from the norm. Guest Rating: 7.7

A retreat into the history of Penang.

Noise from neighbors at night.

This mansion lived up to our hopes. A huge entry with welcoming staff and then to sweep into a large bedroom with a large and comfortable bed, quiet air conditioning and more than ample bathroom facilities, only made us more than happy to avoid yet another 4 star hotel elsewhere. The only downside was the noise from the eatery next door at night, but even that had it's compensations as it provided good and cheap food!

quaint, cosy; extremely convenient location; helpful staff

could be cleaner

Conveniently located in old Penang. In the heart of many walking trails, also close to the local market and shops. Near food places as well. The hotel is charmingly old and quaint, and for you if you like something that is not anything like a chain hotel. Great place to rest and relax in if that's what you want to do.

Restaurant Tip : Soho - just behind the hotel for pub food and beer; Next to Soho (at night) - soup kumbing and soto ayam - very good; Just further down from Soho - many eateries with local food

Nice historical Chinese hotel. We entered in a filmset, but though we could not move freely through the hotel during the shooting hours, we were very pleased with the attention the staff of the hotel gave us.

Not for people who like a busy, hotel with swimmingpool and eveningactivities. The scene is more like a hotel in the old time. Like in a movie.

Hotel Feature Tip : The hotel itself is the best tip I can give. If you never have slept in a nice historical Chinese hotel, than this is the place to be.

One of the perks of staying in the hotel is the free in-house tour offered twice a day (except Sundays). Take advantage of the informative tour and you will gain a better appreciation of this fabulous mansion. Very worthwhile!!!

Absolutely beautiful building, wonderful relaxed atmosphere, fantastic breakfast, excellent location.

It's all good!! No room service, but that's OK--it's not a 'traditional' hotel so I wouldn't expect it.

I had a wonderful stay at the mansion. What a thrill to stay there! The location was perfect, the building was absolutely beautiful, and the service was great. The breakfast was lovely and the setting for it was even better!!

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : You can walk to the E&O Hotel from there, as well as lots of neat 'old' shops etc. Very charming area!

The hotel has pamphlets on self-guided walks from the Penang Heritage Trust which are very useful. There is also a book for sale about the restoration which is an excellent souvenir. It is also worth going on one of the house tours (11:00 or 15:00), free to house guests.

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Turn right down Lebuh Leith, take the first left into Lebuh Muntri, and you can walk all around old Georgetown. For an evening drink by the sea, the E and O is a short walk in the other direction, across Penang Road. Little Penang market happens nearby the last Sunday of each month.

If you like antique furniture, old feeling and atmosphere to your choice of hotel you will be very pleased with the "Blue Mansion".

Nightlife Tip : There is a walking street nearby with a great range of bars, music, and restaurants.
