Great location, old world ambience
Location and feeling of space
8.7
The Mansion is in the heart of the old city, just minutes walk into Little India, to the waterfront perfect for those who like to explore on foot. You only had to ask and Staff were extremely helpful with ideas of where to eat, and where to visit with the time we had. They can organise drivers, or tours to assist. We enjoyed the friendly gate entrance guards greeting you as you came and went. Everyone was relaxed but helpful.
The breakfast was great with options for how you might want your eggs, and we especially enjoyed the homemade apple/ginger preserve on offer. The breakfast service was well run and congenial. Local newspapers were a nice touch, you could linger and drink good coffee as you would in a cafe.
The beautiful architecture with the open courtyard gave a feeling of space offering a variety of areas to sit and read or just muse. Our room was also spacious with the high ceilings and decorated tastefully with old world furniture including table and chair where we happily set up our laptop and used the free wifi. The bed was extremely comfortable with mosquito netting draped over the bed. We should have used that as a couple of the critters joined us for the evening.
The only frustration of our stay was the music - if you could call it that! from the food market located next door. It started up at dinner time and stopped thankfully at 12:30am each night. We had read in Trip Advisor before that it could be a frustration. I think it would have been quieter on the other side of the building.
The cost of a room is quite high for us and we do not normally spend that much, but I can understand that there are some huge costs still being met in the restoration of the Mansion. Joining one of the regular morning or afternoon tours of the building will give you an idea of the history and architecture of the place we called home for three nights.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
We visited the National Park (a 30minute or so drive from Georgetown) and had a great walk for several hours by the sea, you can go inland but we decide with the heat to try and catch some sea breezes. Some hikers had organised to walk one way and have a boat take them back to the National Park office. Good shoes are recommended as we met some people in flimsy footwear struggling over the up and down trail with trees roots and rock. If we had another day we would have explore there some more.
The Spice Farm (on the way to the National Park) was a nice respite from the heat and informative with a local guide. We sniffed and chewed our way round bush covered trails learning about cinnamon, tumeric, cloves etc. and the history of the spice trade.
A nice respite from the heat and walking the old city streets was a stop at the China House, an Australian run cafe/restaurant with fabulous coffee, great selection of cakes and excellently presented food.

Wonderful Stay
historical features, relaxing atmosphere

arrived late to a friendly greeting. we stayed in nanyang which is on the ground floor away from the red garden food court so no issues with noise. amazing room with high ceilings and furnished with antique furniture. lovely to sit outside the room on an evening and take in the atmosphere. breakfast is served in the airy, open air courtyard. as residents you are allowed to take photos and can join the tour for free.
