Gorgeous buildings but too spooky to stay in.

This mansion is awesome to see,maintenance can be better. Room is huge,nice bathroom too. But it's a bit spooky feel like haunted at night. I will recommend ppl to go for visit which you have to pay admission fee for a tour to the compound,but staying there a bit not worth it. It has a bit humidity smell like mildew that's bothering me in the room but if goes away with AC on full force. It's a bit rundown around here and there but inside the room is ok,bathroom also clean and new. Staying here is deff not for everybody. But is was a good experience after all.

the following need to be improved :
a) staff courtesy - wishing guest and with warming gesture.
b) need tv in the room
c) better umbrella
d) key dropping is essential for security
e) better door lock system for security and convienent. also consider on energy saving with door lock (auto power off) system.
f) noisy environment with karaoke stage restaurant next door operating upto midnight
h) better wifi coverage

The rooms had all the moden comforts but set in an amazing historic mansion and all the details and decorations were a reflection of that. The staff were extremely helpful and the hotel was clean and had a great location.

Wonderful old building and friendly staff

Right next to night market/food court with very loud live music of a terrible standard which even the robust old wooden shutters can't muffle. Staff are aware and apologised in advance when showing me the room.
Lovely spacious room. Antique porcelain in a display cabinet and good period decor.
Breakfast OK, but there could be more choice and no Malay dishes on menu, which I would prefer to soggy toast and chicken sausages.
Not much disturbed by the 3 daily guided house tours, but some may find the afternoon one disturbs your siesta.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
Penang Museum is close by and has fascinating material on all the various ethnic groups and threr social history

Unique hotel experience
Good hotel if you're interested in heritage buildings

this hotel offers a unique opportunity to stay in a restored heritage mansion. the primary benefit is that you get all the time you need to explore and take interior photos of this interesting and beautifully restored building (non-guests can only follow a tour guide for a limited tour and not allowed to take photos). rooms are spacious and the breakfast in the courtyard is adequate. the location is fine as it's within walking distance of the other georgetown heritage sites. the downside is that there is an outdoor food court and karaoke next door which is quite noisy late into the night (didn't bother us as we had no problems sleeping through it).
Travel tip:
each room has its own colour scheme and character, so if you get one not to your liking, you can politely ask to see another if available. we asked to see another room as the first one we got was a bit too dark for our taste, and were very happy with our second choice which seemed a lot brighter.

Historic mansion in a great location. In need of a little maintenance, but still a great place to stay. Good breakfasts and lovely staff.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
eat at the Red Garden Cafe (next door) 30+ food choices open 4:30pm-11pm.

treated like royalty at this hotel. the rooms were beautifully appointed, very clean and special. this is an incredible hertiage building and it was a privelige to be able to stay here. only downside was the noisy food court next door. otherwise totally recommended!
