An outstanding hotel, oozing luxury and elegance

I can not recommend this hotel highly enough. It was expensive, but it was worth it (and in terms of luxury hotels I have stayed in, only the Adlon in Berlin matches it!)
The suite was spacious and elegant, with Butler Service. The ambience was charming, stylish in every aspect and redolent of a bygone era. The breakfast and other food was superb, especially the 1885 restaurant. Tere might be a potential problem with a lack of sun loungers, around the pool, but there was not a problem finding space in the four days we were there.
We only wished we could have stayed longer.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
Go to the 'Red Garden' food court/market near the hotel for the fabulous pan-Asian hawker food that Penang is famous for.

we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the e&o and would very much like to stay again. the hotel is a combination of old world charm and contemporary convenience.
Hotel Feature Tip:
We enjoyed the buffet dinners and entertainment at night and the pool area during the day. Complimentary chilled water and fruit juices were very welcome while we lazed around!

we absolutely loved our stay. this place is amazing. our suite was one of the cheapest so we expected small -but no we had sitting area, massive bedroom and a huge bathroom. the bathroom had his and her sinks, big bath, seperate large walk in shower and a toilet with its own door! the service was amazing, helpful, friendly and speedy. the food at breakfast was brilliant - so many choices you could have eaten for the whole day! the pool was beautiful and set in lovely gardens overlooking the sea. i cannot fault this hotel in any way and i would go back in a flash!
Restaurant Tip:
Go to the hotel english afternoon tea. It costs £10 and you get lots of sandwiches and cakes. A real treat and beautiful restaurant. Also outside the hotel there are bars and places to eat. We found them a bit pricey but if you head further down the street opposite the hotel you can find some cheaper places.

Superb service inthis colonial style hotel

our extended family recently stayed here for a long weekend. as we had 2 babies in our group, the hotel had made arrangements to let us check-in early, and check-out late. we stayed in an ocean view room. they provided a cot and all the extras we had specified upon booking. also plenty of fresh fruit and drinking water was supplied. service was excellent, all staff made a real effort to make us welcome and as comfortable as possible.
they were renovating (painting) during july-2011 so sometimes there was a strong smell of paint in the corridors, but it didn't go into the room and so wasn't a huge problem. the swimming pool was lovely, we used it everyday. breakfast, lunches and dinner were all good quality and reasonable proces for a 5* hotel. rooms were spacious, beds / linens very high quality; bathroom fittings & towels/robes also high quality. the tv was a little old, but then, we didn't really sit around to watch it. i am not sure if there was a baby-sitting service, we didn't use it as our baby is still quite young and too prone to waking up at night! we could use the 'lounge' part of our room which separated from the bedroom area with sliding doors so she could sleep in the a darkened room while we were still awake.
we were very happy with the stay. i would think you might be disappointed if you are comparing to a high end 5& hotel such as ritz-carlton; so keep in mind this place had colonial charm which the modern hotel chains do not, so if you want to sample this type of thing, you will enjoy it.
Shopping Tip:
We took a taxi one morning to Gurney Plaza - a very 'western' style shopping mall and quite a contract to other parts of Penang (if you need some air-conditioning and a safe place to walk around)
