Grandeur, charm, aura, location, room size

Service, quality of food, pool cleaniness, staff unfriendliness

The Eastern and Oriental Hotel in Penang is a landmark in historic hotels. Its location is perfect and grandeur unmatched in George Town. Nevertheless the hotel needs to improve the quality of its services and staff and could take more from advantage of its glorious past.

Charming and s.th. really special

Its a city hotel, don't expect nice beaches.

Stayed there for two nights in 04/2009. Upon arrival we were upgraded to real suite which name I already forgot. This suite was like going thru a time tunnel 150 years back. Just perfect. The best about this place is the breakfast on the terrasse. Never had so many choices and such a breath taking view. So I strongly recommend staying at the E&O Hotel even for just 2 nights and then move on to the beaches, you won't be disappointed, trust me!

This is a wonderful heritage building with huge rooms and high ceilings. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole ambiance and would definitely return. It was strategically placed to all the shopping and eating areas.

Thought the staff were helpful but maybe a bit too laid back for such a distinguished place.

The hotel is a gem with lovely view of the sea and a short esplanade to walk out to after meals. It is close enough to penang road, the other historical sites and shopping and eating areas. There is a loop bus you can take to avoid the high taxi prices. A must go is armenian street and perhaps have a meal at the nan yang cuisine restaurant which seems out of the 50's. The old world charm of the hotel was there but the luxurious bathroom was very up to date. There is a wonderful massage spa just across the road which was worth every cent. Truly enjoyed my three days there.

Shopping Tip : Shop at nearby gurney plaza. It is new and has a huge array of shops. There is a food court below as well.

The hotel itself, its ambience and atmosphere.

A little noise between rooms because of the (old) connecting doors.

This was our first, but defineately not last, stay at the famous E&O. A time travelling experience. The hotel wisks you away to a time where traveling around the world was something for the chosen few. From the cold towels by the pool to the doorman that greets you by name on day two, this is a unique experience that we will never forget.

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : The old part of George Town is a fantastic experience. And don't be afraid to eat at the hawkers, it is excelent food.

Everything - service, room, food - everything!

Having to leave!

The E&O is a wonderful hotel. We booked a deluxe suite and it was huge. Two queen size beds, lounge area, desk, dining table, very large bathroom and a sizeable dressing room. It also had a great view of the ocean. We dined at Sarkies corner for one night for their Asian buffet and it was delicious. Great range of foods, a lot of which they cook fresh when you order. The dessert was the best part, lots of choices including a chocolate fondue fountain. Breakfast was also served at Sarkies, again with a great range of choices. It was lovely eating outside and overlooking the water. The pool area also overlooked the ocean and although small compared to other hotels, it has plenty of sun beds and there were never many people in the pool at once. Finally the best thing about the E&O is the service. Extremely attentive staff. The little things - like delivering cold spring water whilst you are swimming, make for a great stay. Would recommend to anyone and everyone.

Restaurant Tip : For something different the Red Garden Food Centre - about 5min walk away on Jalan Penang - has delicious and very cheap hawker food. Like most hawker centres it's only open at night.

Up market with very good service, nothing is to much yrouble. Top quality suites.

Rubish bobbing about in the sea ruining the views over the bay

The Eastern and Oriental is a very high quality hotel. The building has a long history and looks as if the hotel has newly been refurbished. We had a deluxe suite, very spacious with a lovely bathroom and a very colonial atmosphere. Swimming pool and gardens are kept well. The staff are friendly and attentive, nothing is too much trouble. Overall a very enjoyable experience we will definitely stay there again. It was unfortunate that there was a lot of rubbish floating in the sea when we were there, although this is not caused by the hotel they should make effort to get the area cleared. The rubbish ruins the view over the bay.

Very high quality overall, excellent service, ideal location in heritage Georgetown, friendly helpful staff, great sea views, personal attention, good food, compact but welcome pool.

Personally we were very satisfied with our stay. The lack of an accessible and usable beach and the compact pool may be a drawback for some guests.

The E & O Hotel has been charmingly restored to reflect its colonial heritage. The place oozes history and it felt as if we had stepped back in time but with all the modern conveniences. From the welcome on our arrival to our departure seven days later, the friendly but deferential staff ensured all our needs were met. The hotel food was at the high standard expected with the “high tea” being of particular note. Our suite was very spacious and well equipped, with a great sea view and serviced twice daily. Although the hotel is in Georgetown, the rooms were quiet. The central location in this World Heritage listed city made it very convenient for exploring, which we did on foot, although bicycle rickshaws are around. Our stay at the E & O Hotel was our best hotel experience in some 40 years’ travelling around the world.

Restaurant Tip : Avoid eating the mediocre and overpriced food in the western tourist bar street directly opposite the hotel - instead walk along the waterfront towards the town hall and Fort Cornwallis to sample the wide variety of local food at the very busy open air hawker centre.

-24 hour butler service -great variety at breakfast -location

-Taxi drivers will try to charge you extra when they learn you are staying there. -Get a ocean room, or not much of a view

A beautiful hotel with Adaman sea views. Staff is very friendly and helpful. The afternoon was a great treat. For those who want to go out at night, a great nightlife area is across the street. No worries, the windows are sound-proofed.

Fantastic Location, Fantastic Rooms

There is no better hotel to stay in Penang than the E&O hotel. Suites are all so beautiful, it's hard to choose. Breakfast was way above Malaysian 5-star standard. Rooms are so clean that we walked around barefoot in the room and no dust collected on our soles.

Room facilities are quite excellent overall.

Swimming pool was much smaller than my expectation. (It is not good to use the picture, taken by hotel.) We can see the sea, but it is not clean.

The hotel was well maintained, and has a very rich history. I was quite satisfied with staying at the hotel overall. Especially, I loved the room. It is analogue & old, but we can feel histories. I was surprised that there are two basins in bath room, there was beautiful stained glass on the door of the bathroom. The location was quite nice for sight seeing in Georgetown, very convenient, but quiet.

Elegant, quiet, but with all the amenities

A bit of a trip to the Penang beaches, mountains and forest areas

This was a delightful hotel reminescent of the British colonial days. Our window opened out to the sea providing a splendid ambiance for tea time in the cool breezes. The bathroom was quite luxurious and fully furnished with quality toliteries and a fluffy robe. If you long for an elegant, restful location with pleasant, but not hovering service, go to the E & O on your next holiday.

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : A rickshaw ride through old Chinatown was unique and fun.

The wwimming pool is amazing. However, you don't have access to the beach. After Penang, we were continuing our trip to Langkawi and the boat that will get you there in three hours is very close to the hotel.

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : The historic blue Chinese house is nearby and you can visit every day at 11am (now a B&B). We didn't get to do it but it appaers to be a must to visit a typical beautifully kept Chinese house.
