Acceptable hotel Guest Rating: 3.0

It is an acceptable hotel with good value and nice view and it also had free bus to the city. The bus takes people to the beach and the night market, but it takes only 10 people from the whole hotel, so you have to book the day before. The room is comfortable but the cleaners are so slow and not so good. The hotel beach is small; take the bus to the bigger one were you can have a lot of fun.

The room design (the bathroom face the beds), and the cleaners need more improvement .

We arrived for check in earlier than planned and was told room requirements were not available - as it was subject to availability, ie. twin beds in nonsmoking. I insisted and the front desk staff said they'd take care of it. Everything was sorted out in an hour. I was impressed. This non-stressed can-do attitude was reflected in dining attendants, pool staff, housekeeping and concierge. Recent renovations have improved the look and feel of the lobby and other general areas. Bedroom decor is functional but still a little 'faded'. Free hotel shuttle service to major shopping and beach areas is okay but a little restrictive. Pool layout decent and road overpass access to beach a good idea. Breakfast menu fairly extensive but repetitive; not too exciting past the 4th breakfast day. I accidentally left my backpack with important documents at front desk upon checking out - everything was safely kept and returned to me when I dashed back later upon realising the possible 'disaster'. A large group of visiting friends came late-ish (10:30pm) and celebrated a birthday with cake in the foyer sitting area - staff was happy for us to hold the 'impromptu' event - well done for the customer service! Our room view looked out over the top floor of the guest car-park .. not too exciting. The bathroom size and layout hindered movement and accessibility - perhaps a sliding door would be better than the hinged (& squeaky) variety.

• Nightlife Tip : Short taxi ride (don't walk - too far) up to the night market charms of the Batu Ferringhi area.

A Delightful 3 Nights Stay Guest Rating: 4.5

After reading the reviews of the Hydro Majestic, we were not expecting much. However, we were delighted to find out that those reviews were not at all telling of our stay in this hotel. Upon arrival, we did have to fight for 10 mins or so to get a proper non-smoking room, but in the end, we were up to our non-smoking room with a little view of the sea off our nice-sized balcony within 20 minutes. The rooms were very clean, modern, and we were provided with bottled water at no cost. There were no signs of unkept room service or bugs of any sort. The breakfast was very nice. The open-air seating was always refreshing in the morning, and the food was quite good. Certainly not the best hotel food ever, but much better than anticipated. The staff in the eatery was kind and understanding as well. The beach was very nice and clean. It is true that the hotel is 2 windy, unwalkable KMs from the Ferringi Beach, but why would you want to venture off to a busy beach when you can enjoy a private, well-kept beach for yourself. And, while you relax in the sun, have a drink or lunch at Miami Cafe, which you pass on your way down to the beach. This cafe seems run-down and sketchy, but it actually is quite the hidden gem! We wish we had more time to spend at Miami Cafe! Overall, minus a few small glitches, our stay at the Hydro Majestic was delightful, and we didnt want to leave. The most important part of staying in this hotel is not to expect a complete 5 star experience, if you want that, book a room at the much pricier Golden Sands Resort. But, for the money, you cant get better than the Hydro Majestic in Batu Ferringi!!

• Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Hire a car to take you around for the day. You can easily visit the Tropic Spice Garden, the Butterfly Farm, the Tropical Fruit Farm, and take a beautiful drive through the island in one day. You may also consider hiring a scooter for the day, but be aware that traffic is bad, and the local drivers are not considerate to pedestrians. You risk getting in a serious accident if you take out a scooter. You can hire cars for the day in the lobby of the Hydro Majestic. The car service is a nice change from haggling with taxi drivers to get the right price.

I've had a very pleasant stay at the Hydro Majestic hotel and would definatly come back if I'll ever visit Penang again. Penang is a very nice island, loved the Batu Ferringhi area and the nature (fruit garden, spice garden, waterfall).

- Spacious, comfortable and clean rooms - Nice pool - Not far from the beach (just cross the road using the bridge at the pool area) - Lovely view from the balcony (sea and hills)

- Location (far from Batu Ferringhi, but 10 minutes by taxi, about 10 ringits = 2 EUR)
