Our check-in to Traders hotel was a last minute thing, ie. a surprise for my wife. We were at Copthorne Orchid for 2 nights, and were almost bound for Kuala Lumpur that morning, when I decided to book into Traders, via Agoda for another night. No regrets after that. From the moment I stopped my car at the hotel front to unload my luggage, we can see the difference at once.....I mean service. Baggage was taken off almost immediately, and properly tagged and we were given a tag to identify our belongings. Checking in was a breeze, not more than 5 minutes, though it was funny to see the front office guy "fighting" with his colleague over room 929 to quickly checking me into it. Room layout and bedding is nice and quite thorough, though the room still stinks of cigarette smoke, probably from the previous occupant. The hotel's policy on environmental conservation, is good to note. The connection to Komtar had been close, and was a little disappointed, as I remembered clearly as a child last time, the link was pretty cool. We had to walk out through the main entrance of the hotel, and we eventually got a bit wet when we returned, and not very good for my little girl. Food wise, not very sure but the chicken satays we ordered for room service was really lean and good. I think the hotel should sell their rooms with breakfast, as breakfast was not included in our case. Most hotels that I've stayed over Malaysia, Europe, Australia and certain parts of Asia, would provide breakfast. I think a good breakfast would make someone feel really good at a start for the day, not waking up in the morning and have to think of where to go for breakfast. Off course, my Gamin GPS system was really of great help. The live band at the lobby lounge was not impressive at all, even those at Colmar, Berjaya Hills can do much better. Last but not least, we are thinking of going back to Traders Hotel again, but we may give Northam All Suites a shot the next time. Will see then.

Overall services of the hotel was pretty good. From the bell boy, to the quick check-in, the quick basket of fries to the pool, the great tasting satays to the room via room service. Everyone was amazingly quick in fulfilling our requests. Just great.

The car park has no lift. We ended up having to carry our own luggages down the steps after checking out, via the reception area. Staff at the lobby lounge are rather bias towards the "Mat Sallehs," and there's a tendency to ignore our own people, Malaysians. Otherwise, everyone seems to greet everyone with a great smile, and that's great, esp. when we were on a vacation.

Room was nice and clean although we booked a non-smoking room and had put us to a smoking room. But the matter was solved quickly and painlessly. Location is great. If you're thinking about taking a coach to other cities this is the area. They have tons of bus companies in the area. Great deal for what we paid.

Good location.

Nothing really.

was it worth it? i guess. finding the hotel was a breeze cause it's right next to komtar, the only sky scraper in georgetown. finding the parking lot was a different matter altogether as there was all one way streets around the hotel. the car park is so small you will not have a space left when there is any function (wedding etc) in the hotel. all guests will be left in a lurch. no apologies there from the management. the room itself was nice and posh-ish from a 1990s point of view. need updating especially the CRT TV. i mean who watches that? get an LCD which won't cost much. bathroom nice with antifog mirror. you get a closeup view of komtar and pranging mall out your window and little else. might as well cause georgetown 'city centre' is falling into disrepair (read :eyesore). internet was overpriced (RM25/day, don't even think about the 15 minute charges - exorbitant) so didn't bother with that. get nice freebies like lotion, shampoo, conditioner. bathrobe and complimentary slippers and loads of towels a nice touch.

nice bathroom fittings, comfy bed with down comforter & pillow, very clean and virtully dust free, minibar, reasonable room service, nice counter staff.

no parking on night of stay - have to park in a squat opposite. tiny pool. a lobby lounge too brightly lit with no atmosphere.

  • Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : you can virtually go anywhere on a bus from komtar. you just need balls of steel and willingness to walk in the hot sun and get all dewy. lots of local food within walking distance mainly chinese and indian-muslim fare. cheong fatt sze within walking distance but get this - they only have 2 tours / day. 11am and 3pm. can't enter at any other time. hope they close shop soon.

I enjoyed my stay at Traders - Penang. The location was great especially for those wanting to shop, as the new mall is directly behind. Staff very friendly and helpful - the hotel should take credit especially for the little things that add to a good stay - giving you details of the taxi you are about to take etc. The strawberry smoothies and lounge music make a perfect end to an evening.

Location - brilliant Staff - very friendly Facilities - good

No pool serving staff - could not order drinks had to go into the gym and ask at reception for someone to be sent to take an order etc.

  • Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Dont go to the Snake Temple - the snakes inside are fake, the place is run down and not even worth a donation.

Pros: service in Traders Hotel was excellent really. The staffs were keen to make sure that you enjoyed your stay there, and are really fantastic in their side role as a "tour guide." They were unconditional in the effort that they provided to us, and always had a smile whenever they dealt with us. I really thought that they excelled in service. Basic room services like changing of towels etc. were well done. Location was fantastic, and during the trip, I really felt that the location alone meant that I made the right choice in choosing Traders, apart from other choices like Dorsett, etc. Traders is just situated beside Komtar tower in which you could take pratically all the buses that you need to cover all places. Each bus ride cost 1-2 ringgit, while providing a fantastic atmosphere of travelling. Taking taxis everywhere is certainly possible, though the mark up is really high and is definitely not worth it. You could reach the same place through buses, though you may need to spend slightly more time (5-10 mins more). Nearby to Jalan Mcallister and Penang road, these are two great night areas. With the former being a night hawker area serving really great local food at economic prices, and the latter being a famed nightlife area with pubs and clubs. All are within walking distance. It's one of the cheaper 5 star hotel around in Georgetown, given it's location, service and quality, the amount that you pay for certainly is a steal. Cons: Well, the rooms were slightly disappointing. That doesn't mean that it's poor though, it just didn't feel as grand as i thought a 5 star should have. Perhaps 4.5 star quality. That's about it for the cons.

Service, location, value.

Rooms.

  • Shopping Tip : Firstly, having Komtar just beside Trader's is a fantastic bonus. The bus interchange allows you to get anywhere pretty comfortably, and cheaply. Perhaps avoid tourist based attraction like night market, etc, as the mark up could be ridiculously high. $500rm for a sling bag? You get the point. Try the local markets, though you need to enquire about these markets through the hotel's staffs. Get to Jalan Mcallister and Penang Road for food, and pubs/clubs respectively.

it is a very nice and clean hotel, with good Staff Performance, they are really helpfull, but it not good for tourists at all because of it is location, it is in the middle of the town with no beach, dirty blace, no near by shopping, i recommend it for traders only, it has a very expensive survices like internet, i generally recomend the beach side for tourists, not the city at all.

very nice and clean hotel, good Staff Performance.

The free shuttle bus to its sister hotel the Golden Sands Resort on the northern beaches was a bonus. Guests can use (free) the facilities there.

  • Restaurant Tip : For those who do not have breakfast included I recommend the Indian restaurants 300 meters away across the road.
