Tired Hotel in Lovely Location

We chose this hotel because it was at the end of the Borneo Railway line and a good stop off point for our journey through the interior of Sabah to Mt Kinabalu. Also it boasted an orchid farm and the elusive rafflesia (yet again, I just missed out and the last of the season had died off). Also came for the coffee - it is really good! Unfortunately the train trip from Beaufort to Tenom was cancelled without notice even though we went to the station two days in a row to check that the train was going to the end of the line. We were told even on the morning of the trip that it was. Tired and annoyed, we arrived to this spectacular mountain - top village. The birds were everywhere and we never heard such calls before. The hotel was a tired old Perkasa but we asked for the top floor corner room - larger and with glorious views. Nothing much worked but we could open the huge picture window to take in the fresh air and jungle sounds - until 11pm when the bar started up. After some arguing, we were moved to the other side of the building and all was well. Generally this hotel is OK but do not expect standards most of us are used to in Australia. We were shown one room which reeked of stale cigarette smoke - most rooms had smoker damage but the rooms we had ended up being quite clean though shabby.
