a new, but overpriced way to experience maldives

We had planned a break in our holidays in sri Lanka and went to the Maldives, staying over at a hotel on an inhabitated island.
Although the rooms were good, they were right next to the former main prison, now in use as a rehabilitation centre, and overlooking a beach that has been largely destroyed by the 2004 tsunami.
Upon arrival we found that the TV, shared refrigerator, and catamaran were broken. Only after asking about five times, did the hotel manager - who was actually a really nice guy - come up with a laptop on which we could watch a movie.
Service wasn't really good either - and we missed the generosity and smile we couldn't get enough from on the neighbouring main island sri Lanka.
The island maafushi itself isn't a great place to be. Fortunately we had the ability and money to go on some excursions for snorkeling, diving, night fishing and we visited a nearby island resort too. However the hotels on the island have a strange way of managing excursions for customers: in principle tourists are not allowed to join other boats from 'competing' hotels for excursions. This monopoly means that if you're traveling as a couple you pay far more than necessary for excursions.
We decided not to obey this 'rule' and managed to join up with some really great tourists we met on the island - which was also a lot more fun!
All in all we made the most of our stay, but we had to be quite creative at times.

Restaurant Tip:
You can walk around 10 mins to the beach and restaurant.

Maafushi island is beautiful-Isaland cottage niCE

Island cottage has 2 facilities- holiday inn and island cottage at Mafushi island. Beach is 10 mins brisk walk or 15 mins leisure walk.
Full of natural shells and has 2 souvenier shops in maafushi island and 1 convenient store.
Hotel is next to a rehabilitation centre for drug addicts. This section is caged and has no impact on the normal life in Maafushi island.You do not even see any oen there. Hotel has a good view from the terrace to the sea.
Food is same in all the restaurants and we had it in couple of them. Maldivian recipies are a bit strong and preferred to go back to continental food. Alcohol is not served any where and is a taboo. For alcohol have to go by speed boat with 25$ per boat per trip one way. and then you land up on a resort and drink and be back.
Beach is fun for 2 days a max of a holiday as it can be covered in 20 mins by foot as a complete round.
Rooms do not have TV and no toileteries provided except towels. However,overall we were satisfied with the hotel because of the servcie and cleanliness. Bad at making omlets :)). Non alcoholic beer taste same as beer with zero effect. :)
Restaurant Tip:
You can pick drinks from tehnear by convenient store and sip happily on the beach . Souvenier shop neds heavy negotiation.

Brand new hotel with large and clean rooms .The employees are friendly and helpfull ,but you must cheeck your bild before leaving.
Hotel is to close from the jail and far from the only beach of
Maafushi.

big and clean rooms, small hotel with private speedboat wich can take you each day to a different resort, nice staff, good breakfast, you can get a lot of information about locals and maldivian way of life...much cheaper way to see maldivian islands...

L island Cottage est tres recente, les chambres sont tres confortables avec climatisation, ventilateur au plafond, douche tres moderne avec tres bonne pression, toilettes a l'europeenne, wifi gratuit dans tout l hotel .
La nourriture ( petit dejeuner et diner ) etais excellente et d un rapport qualite prix defiant toute concurrence.
La maison d hotes se trouvant sur une ile habitee par des maldiviens le port du bikini n est pas autorise et une tenue couvrant les genoux et les epaules est obligatoire en dehors des murs de l hotel.
L hotel organise toutes les activites a la demande dont les journees dans les resorts avoisinant pour une somme bien inferieure au prix d une nuit dans ce meme resort.
En resume : l argent que vous economiserez sur le logement et les repas vous permettra de faire une activite differente chaque jour en evitant d etre confine dans la meme ile pendant toutes vos vacances !
