Savoy Hotel Yangon Info

This place oozes colonial history and the rooms are impeccable with polished teak floors and crispy cotton sheets. It is just a short 10 minute walk to Schwedagon Pagoda. Other attractions are all a short taxi ride down the street. Rooms by the pool can be quieter than those facing the road which does have some traffic. There is a lovely reading room where one can enjoy a drink or simply read the papers. This boutique hotel is one of the top places to stay in Yangon. One of the details that leaves a lasting impression on a guest is the collection of antiques and art that is spread around the hotel.

We stayed at the Savoy in the immediate afermath of the cyclone Nargis, when many other hotels were closed due to lack of electricity. The Savoy stayed open, operating a generator 6 hours a day and pumping water from its own well. The rest of the time it was candlelight and torches....and yes, at times it was very hot! Due to circumstances, the restaurant and bar menus were very reduced. Nevertheless, we appreciated all the efforts made by the staff and the General Manager to keep things going as well as possible. The hotel itself has a lot of charm, and we look forward to staying here again under more normal conditions! Once again bravo to all the team there for making it as comfortable as possible in a very difficult time.

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Within walking distance of the Shwedagon.

Our stay during the Water Festival was made all the better by the active participation by truck the hotel put on during the festival. Shwedagon is a very short walk away. Most other sites short taxis ride but very cental yo all.

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Despite the heat the Water Festival is well worth the effort. A whole city water fight!
