The Governor'S Residence Hotel Yangon Info

This huge teak mansion is a boutique hotel owned and operated by the Orient-Express, who restored this beautiful hotel to its 1920 grandeur. The downtown district is about 15 minutes away. Nestled in the elegant Embassy Quarter of Yangon, this property is set among verdant gardens and koi ponds and the Shwedagon Pagoda is only 10 minutes by taxi. The hotel is more than willing to arrange trips to historic sites as well as to markets. This place allows guests to experience what life was like when the property was in its former glory as the actual residence of the governor or Yangon.

Small somewhat resort-like hotel in a green, quiet setting outside city core.

Location. For our tastes, too far from city core and taxis not available without help from the hotel. Too far to walk for any sights or shopping. Prices especially in bar and restaurant are very high and beyond the prices for a hotel in this good but not exceptional category.

This is a lovely, renovated, teak structure set in green, lush, pond-surroundings, far enough from the city core to offer it an intimate, tranquil ambiance different from the standard hotels in city core. Rooms are simple, if not even a bit rustic, but consistent and complementary with the overall feeling of the hotel. I am not sure it is truly value for money given current hotel prices in Yangon and it's location. It is definitely a distance from all sights and restaurants so hiring a taxi all day is helpful if staying here.

Shopping Tip : ART ONLY is a large, simple and lovely teak outlet for Burmese arts (lacquerware, religious items, etc) both new and antique. It is huge and one of the best to be found in SE Asia. Restaurant: Le Planteur is touted as one of the best French eateries in Yangon, but living in France personally, the food is well-below standard (even in the SE Asian context) and well overpriced. The renovated colonial house is however stunning.
