We had a good stay in the Potala guest house. The staff in particular were friendly and helpful. The room (a triple)was large and cool - slightly worn features but it appeared clean. Ok wifi.

This is my second time of staying in this hotel. I booked a budget single room, which is the same size of standard room, with attached bathroom too. But the difference between budget room and standard room is: 1) budget room has carpet floor(dusty and smells), and standard room has wooden floor(more clean). 2)There is no TV in budget room. But the quality of standard room is much better.
The staff understands this and willing to switch me to a standard room. By paying the extra charge, I was able to stay in standard room. This shows how thoughtful and helpful their staffs are. They would like to help in all ways you might need.
Everyday I saw groups of foregin tourists coming to this hotel, which is a sign that their price and quality could really satisfy people...and also their system must be good so that they can handle to lodge groups of people.
I will come to stay here if I plan to come back to Thamel again in the future.

Like staying with friends
Staying at Potala Guest House is lika staying at a friends house. The staff are willing to help with anything, from offering tea in the garden, finding the right guide to whatever problem you may have.

I was alone in Kathmandu when i arrived, but after I checked in at Potala I didnt feel alone again until I left.
I sincerely recommend this hotel.

Greatest Hotel for Budget Saving Traveller

For the price I paid for the standard room, it was really a surprise to get a nice room where I stayed. It is not spacious, but feels very cozy, safe, and neat. The floor is wooden floor, so it feels dry and warm, different from the carpet floor which has moisture and smell. The hotel has full back-up power system after 6pm everynight, so there is no worries about electircity for hot shower, TV, computer during the nights. Wifi works ok in the room, and hot shower never fails. The staff in reception always serve with smiles and are willing to offer imformation and service. They have a cloak room especially for valuable items of guests. The only flaw in my room is that there is no window in the bathroom, so the steam from hot shower has no where to go. Therefore you can see the wall is getting moldy.
The hotel is only 3 minutes away from the busy parts of Thamel, easy to find restaurants and good for shoppoing. There are usually taxi waiting in front of hotel, so it is also easy to get one to go to other place. For the quality you can get in this hotel, maybe you have to pay 10 US dollar more elsewhere. So for me, this is so far the best option for a cozy enjoyment with kind of budget price.

Cons : Wifi speed could be improved. No electricity back up. No desk in the room. No weights room.
However, the price is quiet good if you just need a clean room, a good bed and a warm shower.
Hotel Feature Tip:
The manager can speak French, English and Italian fluently.

Excellent budget option! Hotel is located in the far corner of Thamel tourist area. Thus all restaurants are close, but it is still quite peaceful, away from Thamel buzzle.

This was already my second time at Potala guest house and I have recommended it to some friends also. Everyone has been happy with it. Ask for a garden view room! rooms on the street side can be a bit noisy. Hotel has a nice garden, where you can have breakfast. Order for food at hotel reception, not at the restaurant.

Nice guesthouse in Thamel

We had stayed at the Kathmandu Guest House on a previous visit and I would recommend the Potala Guest House over that one. The staff was a lot more helpful and friendly. The room was large and there was an outside central area where one could have a drink or something to eat. We will definitely stay at this guest house on future trips to Nepal.
