Safe hotel in a relatively bad part of town
The hotel is safe, clearn and very comfortable.
9.3
I was, frankly, hesistant to book the La Corona hotel. It is in a very old part of Manila that a number of travelers may describe as dangerous and run-down. I don't know how true that characterisation of the area really is, but the hotel was quite confortable. The room was clean (my primary concern) and the locks on doors were strong and workable. The hotel staff were courteous (as always) and friendly and very helpful. This is definitely a place that I will come to stay again when visiting Manila.
Nightlife Tip:
Cowboy Grill on Mabini Street (one block above) consistently offers the best live music in town.

Gem amongst the chaos outside
8.3
Best Western Hotel La Corona at Ermita is a gem that stands right in the midst of a chaotic dirty district. Everything that is right about this hotel does not apply to the area it is in. Despite that, the location of the hotel is good and within walking distance to the main attractions in manila (such as Rizal Park, Intramuros). Do head over to the seafood market just down the next street for some cheap and excellent seafood fare.

best western consistency
location, staff, breakfast
8.3
having stayed in a number of best westerns worldwide, they are always reliable and of a certain standard. In this one, the breakfast was good with western/asian choice, the room was fine, if a little small and the staff were always friendly and helpful. An oasis of tranquility in the frenetic environment of Manila.

Booked a family room with extra bed for the extended family and the staff were super. The little one was unfortunately sick but the sheets were quickly changed with no fuss. The kids loved the place as did the adults and Best Western helped make the stay special.

Keeps getting better
Actually maintained, passable wifi, hotel cab still 500 pesos, great location
9.7
They actually replaced the elevator. It's no longer the rediculously slow one you will read about in old reviews. It's new, modern, fast, and best of all no longer a lurking disaster waiting to happen. Right across the street from a 7-11, nag inasal rice place, and jolibee burger joint. Around the corner from the red light district and a big mall. Close to US embassy, and a reasonable drive to the airport. Has an in hotel restaurant that is decent, but affords a price premium. Our most recent stay got us upgraded to a free corner suite, I'm guessing because all the normal rooms were booked. Depending on what room you stay in your view is either of a wall of an adjacent building, which sucks, but its quite. Or a nice view up and down the main strip, but you get the city noise from the street, which I personally enjoy and find comforting. But it could bother some. Bathroom shower has hot water, actually good water pressure, and is the fall down from the ceiling type which is nice. However the suite have an old fashioned fiber glass bathtub and shower curtain in them which i dislike. The standard rooms have the walk in glass stall with tile floor, much better. Why you would equip the superior suite with the crappier shower I don't know, but minor con all in all. I have not found a better hotel to stay at in manila yet, especially for this price point of about $ a night.

Not in the best of areas, but overall a good hotel for the money. One of our 2 rooms had hard mattress. Staff was courteous and efficient with transportation arrangements. Close to US Embassy & short taxi ride to Mall of Asia. Free WiFi works in the rooms. Night clubs close by, even though not interested. For an overnight transfer visit, I would stay there again and recommend to others.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
Short distance by taxi to Mall of Asia; walking distance to Rizal Park & US Embassy.
