The deposit for this hotel is 1500 pesos as of May 2013. The WiFi password is in the network name so once you know it it’s hard to forget. I was able to download well-seeded torrent files at 50 -100 kbps on average using the in-house WiFi. The AC wasn’t working due to no refrigerant charge when I arrived but they offered to fix it immediately, and did so, same-day, once I informed the hotel staff. Honestly I worried my cash and electronics, perhaps $2000 total value, might be "disappeared" from my room by some staff member with a key copy, especially considering this is a super-economy hotel in a working-class neighborhood of a relatively poor country. But that never happened, even when I left my own key set with hotel staff so they could fix the AC while I was out; they apparently don't keep spare keys on hand. Theft from outside was never a concern as all Excel Inn rooms are on the ground floor and staff is always posted in front of the entrance 24/7, plus the rooms are quite impenetrable without power tools. My impression was that warnings re: crime are exaggerated.
Be warned that this is an extremely povertous neighborhood by Western standards. Cockroaches roam the streets at night; two got into my room under the sink when they smelled fruit I had stored there. Skinny kitties also roam the streets looking for food and people including small children pick through the garbage for recyclables at night. If your heart is too soft to face the reality of third-world poverty then look elsewhere. However, everyone in the area is very polite, no one begs near the hotel entrance, and the scavengers are extremely grateful for any food you can spare. Avoid giving cash away as drug abuse does exist even among young kids. Also: the taxi from Ninoy should cost you about 150-250 pesos; demand the driver stay "on-meter" before leaving the airport and don't reward shake-down behavior; require a receipt or visual of the meter total or refuse to pay more than 200p.
