Ermita
Ermita / Intramuros is at the center of metro Manila. This is the heart of the Philippines, with a heady mix of Spanish colonial architecture and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Hotels in Ermita / Intramuros are popular with tourists entering or leaving the archipelago.
Emita district is a hermitage that stood here in the 16th century. It has been rebuilt many times, and the original space is now occupied by Ermita Church. There are several sightseeing attractions in Ermita, including Rizal Park, full of historical monuments and fringed by important government offices. Today, the hotels in Ermita are some of Manila’s newest, and there are several modern shopping malls and department stores in the area.
Intramuros lies north of Rizal Park on the border with Ermita. This is the historic core of Manila, walled in by 16th-century fortifications. One of the most unique destinations in Asia, Intramuros feels more like a medieval European fortress than a destination in the South Pacific. Most of the buildings and ramparts standing today were rebuilt after the bombings of WWII.
Fort Santiago is open for tours here, and it also hosts the popular Rizal Shrine. Tourists can spend several days exploring the remnants of this old city, with cathedrals, monuments and museums that are all worth visiting. There is accommodation in Intramuros suitable for any budget, with plenty of affordable guesthouses and five-star establishments in the mix.
Ermita / Intramuros also happens to have one of the best nightlife districts in Manila. The better selection is in Ermita, particularly along Adriatico Street and the Baywalk that connects Ermita to Malate. Each four- or five-star hotel has its own selection of restaurants and bars, and most have a dance club or lounge on site.
