Nice building, easy to recognize, clean and very comfortable bed.

Even the hotel is in Geylang area ( noisy and redzone), but I didnt hear any noise at all despite my room was right in front of the street. The staff there were very helpful. The hotel is clean. It was more then we expected. At first we planed to stay only one night there, but at the end we extended our stay at the hotel cos it's very convenient, easy to access transportation like bus and mrt. I think the price we paid it's sooo worth it with the service we received. If u r looking for budget hotel in Singapore, pls do choose 81 star.. you wont be dissappointed. If compared to the other budget hotel in downtown, i think you'll have to pay much more or double price, but what u get will be the same quality, but only shorter distance to travel. So far hotel 81 star is not far from town and we took taxi from Orchard rd to this hotel costs us only S$6, which is cheap price though. Try it and u will know that how much it's worth

Nightlife Tip : If u r looking for red zone, then u should stick around this area. But if u dont, then pls do like we did. Just walked to MRT and go to Orchard rd to do some shopping.

Cheap, simple, nice location in busy area

not 100% clean, no restaurant/room service / minibar in the middle of the red light district

This hotel is value for money if you dont mind the neighbors. The bed is clean, the showers hot and that is it; not more, not less.Alone I would certainly come back here (area is lively with many small local restaurants) but this is not suited for business or family trips

Restaurant Tip : In the mainstreet 50 meters from the hotel there are plenty of local open air eateries which serve great food for a low price (no signboard restaurant for seafood is great)

Cheap and decent for short stay

In the red light district. No mini-bar/fridge.

Good hotel. Friendly staff who are helpful. Clean and quiet rooms, if a little small. Good for an overnight stay, but not really comfortable for much more than that. There is an abundance of good food within walking distance, however you'll have to walk around the red light district to find it.

Location reasonably close to airport and value for money

Close to red light area

Arriving at 3.00 am we only needed somewhere to stay for six hours and this hotel suited our needs. As it is only a one to two star rated property we were not expecting a lot. The room is very basic, however it was very clean. It is situated in the red light area. This did not interfere with us as our requirements were only sleep. Close by is the Malay Village Market which is an interesting venue, along with plenty of restaurants. We would recommend this hotel only for a short stay.

Hotel Feature Tip : Don't expect too much

Price.

Singapore's red light district.

I'm a big fan of this hotel. Reasonably priced and with everything you need for a short stay. I don't think it would be too comfortable after a couple of days though. Staff were courteous and efficient. Rooms were clean enough. Enjoy the food all around the area, but be prepared for the lines of women out on the street.

The staff is friendly and spoke English. The hotel is in a good location, close to the MRT and there are many roadside restaurants nearby. Also a few bars in the area as well. This area is one of the red light districts in Singapore, so that can be a pro or a con.

Rooms are a little small for the price. The first room I looked at smelled musty, so I changed rooms with no problem. No restaurant in the hotel. Sometimes noisy due to all the activity in the area. This area is one of the red light districts in Singapore, so that can be a pro or a con. Had to pay for internet access.

I stayed at Hotel 81 Star for four days at the end of January, 2009. They hotel is located on the outskirts of town, but is easily accessible via the MRT (10 minute walk) and plenty of taxis. When I arrived, I was greeted by a friendly staff. I checked the first room that smelled musty, so I asked to change rooms. There was no problem changing. The room was a little small, but the bed was comfortable and the air conditioner was cold. The bathroom was likewise small, with the shower being the whole bathroom and of course no bathtub. The hotel seems to be geared toward budget travelers and short time stays. There wasn't really anywhere to unpack my suitcase either, no drawers, but a few hangers. The staff did have tourist information in the lobby and were helpful in helping me find my way around Singapore. I guess my biggest complaint was having to pay for internet access in the room. They charge 10SD per day. Internet cafes charge 2SD per hour, so you would have to stay on the internet 5 hours a day just to break even. I would probably stay here again based on location, comfort and cost.

Very clean rooms with all the things we wanted... TV., Private bathroom with Hot water, WiFi, close to the MRT and away from centre of the shopping malls.

I really can't think of any cons. The hotel is in the "Red Light" district, however we never felt unsafe in this neighbourhood.

We were seeking affordable and comfortable accommodation in Singapore and didn't want to stay in the backpacker haunts as we had in our youth. When searching online, we found the Hotel 81 chain and the room met all our needs...Clean, affordable, Private bath with hot water and TV with some English channels, WiFi available in our room and close enough to the centre of the city by MRT.

dirty surround - Geylang, There wasn't any window in the room.

There is NO WIFI in the hotel and never been. You can connect via wire in the rooms, of course for charge. This hotel is situated in Geylang, which is the dirtiest part of the proud Singapore. The hotel price shows the quality of the hotel and the area. There is the bus stop right on the corner and from there you can catch easily the centre.

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Bus number 2 to the city centre

Cheap, room is small but good enough given the price paid .

Aircon wasn't functioning well, room was a bit warm and humid. Bathroom is prehistoric without separate shower.

Yes it is in a red light district with hookers running everywhere in the area where the hotel is located. Arrived quite late at 11pm. Was sort of concerned about security things after reading some of the reviews on other websites, but found it wasn't too bad when i arrived. Those prostitutes didn't bother and the hotel staff basically kept them out of the doors. The room was rather old, humid and warm as the aircon wasn't functioning well. Wouldn't recommend for a long stay, but for someone staying for only a night like myself it is not a bad choice considering the price.

The rooms are nice and clean

Situated in the red light district

This is a value for money hotel. It is clean and tidy and the staff are charming and helpful. The only inconvenience is its location but it is a nice place and safe place to stay despite being located in the red light district. It is from walking distance to the Aljunied MRT, the surrounding is very lively and you can get food almost at anytime of the day.

Restaurant Tip : If you like value for money food you should try the steamboat buffet. There are a lot of restaurants within walking distance from the hotel offering the steamboat buffet. If you are staying at this hotel, trying the steamboat buffet is a must.

It's o.k. the strong point is not so far from a train station and a city.

It was crowded at night. If you were there only women. You don't go there.

A hotel-81 - Star is quite clean but in my opinion Hotel81 -Geyland is cleaner and better than Hotel-81 - Star. But it's ok.

Proximity to MRT Station. On airport side of Singapore. Cheap.

Internal noise at night. Tatty, the hotel needs to be refurbished. In the Red Light district and business goes on in rooms on every floor here!

A case of 'You get what you pay for.' I booked because this hotel was a cheap place to stay, but on reflection, I would rather pay more and get a good night's sleep. I am an older solo woman traveller and the taxi driver summed it up when he shook his head and said, 'This hotel no good for you.' Being in a red light area didn't worry me, the industry is controlled in Singapore, and the busy streets were non threatening, but the noise in the hotel all night was awful. First there was the crowd of shouting loud Australian young people, then the 'girls' using the rooms most of the night. Cell phones going and talking constantly in the corridors. The shabby room was less than clean too. To sum up, if you're on a low budget, you'd be better off in a backpackers'.

Nightlife Tip : If you've never seen a Red Light district operating, this is the one for you!

Staffs are nice, room clean is ok.

area not good, I think that you can do nothing about it. only 2 towels, should give at least 2 more small towels.

area not so good, I think that's you can do nothing about it. hotel staffs are nice, a lot of foods near by. walking distance to subway, room cleanness is ok, but only 2 towels each day, should at lease give 2 more small towels. if price is very cheap, will concede, if small difference, don't bother.spend little more, get a better area.
