Great location but small room

helpful staff

standard single room is small, the light in the room is not fully bright as I imagined. But overall impression is good. Somehow the voice from adjacent room can be heared without they try so hard. I can hear the giggle from my next door from the bed. Free Wi-fi connection provided is unstable.
Restaurant Tip: Location is near to the night market and food street. The food street is just on the exit of the hotel. And if you're looking for the souvenirs, there's a lot of choice, if you're looking for the best price.

small and noisy

location
4.7
Very small room 1.5mx2.5 including bathroom. The bathroom is so small that the shower is on the toilet (literally). Almost no room to put the luggage. No wardrove. The window is blocked by the bed so you can't get natural light. On of the days they were doing repairs in a shop at night. I couldn't sleep until 3am.

A cosy cubbyhole of a budget hotel

Unique decor, highly central location
6
The Santa Grand Lai Chun Yuen stands out with it's rather opulent interior design as well as it's history of being a former Chinese opera house, making it a rather pretty sight to look at. Some may not like the dim lighting, but I feel it adds to a comfortable, cosy atmosphere. Beyond the surface, what you get are tiny rooms and thin walls - an affliction of every budget boutique hotel I've stayed in. This particular one throws in wooden floors - great for the colonial-era shophouse authenticity, but beware of thoughtless guests dragging their chairs and stomping across the floor above you. I didn't suffer from noise from the busy outside streets though, probably because I was located in the middle of the building with a windowless room to boot. Furthermore, the atmosphere of the place made me feel like I was staying in a cosy cubbyhole rather than the "small, windowless room" impression I typically get with other budget boutique places. It's not sparkly clean but clean, nevertheless. Breakfast was mediocre at best but hey, you're in Singapore where there is a whole lot of gastronomic variety to be explored, so just go out and eat! The real payoff is in the location. Right in the heart of Chinatown, with all the food and drinking and shopping right at the doorstep. Access to Singapore's excellent MRT is only a few minutes stroll away. While not cheap, the price seems to be in the general range of the market - Singaporean hotels are pricey! You might find a cheaper hotel with the same room size and facilities if you can find one with less cosmetic frills, and in a less centralised location. I had booked a room with a single bed but got upgraded to one with a double bed, so that was a lucky plus for me, though I suspect there isn't much difference other than the bed size. All in all, I had a satisfactory stay. Obviously it's no Shangri La, but it was pretty much what I expected to get for what I was paying for in the Singaporean lodging context.

This is the good hotel for stay on business or leisure as well. Reception & lobby look very nice, especially in the night. Room is clean and quiet for your time. If I come next time, I will choose it again.

Good Location but small room

Good Location right in the middle of Chinatown street, and there are many food stalls around the hotel

There is a balcony outside the room for the room i stayed. It makes me feel like i back to the 70's century with those old old building around. Quite a Nice feeling standing at the balcony. MRT just less than 5 mins walking.

The staff were very nice even though there was a slight confusion when I checked in. The room was clean but very small. There was barely enough room to stand after I opened my suitcase.

Strategic hotel location in chinatown

Free coffee provided
8.3
Friendly staffs and they take care of your requests promptly. Free coffee is provided at the hallway. So you can make your own coffee at any time. You can drop your luggage at the counter before check-in time. They will carry them for you to the room when it is check-in time. If you need a cab, try not book the cab through the hotel. It is expensive. Sound-proof is not done well. So you can't turn on the TV volume too loud.

Love everything, except that the room didn't feel like its in normal room temperature when we first went in, probably because it has no window. And the aircon is a little bit weak, took like more than an hour to really cool.down the air inside the room. On a lighter note, more tv channelsi would be perfect. beautiful furnishes in hotel, and the free hot beverages with tv and comfy seating outside rooms is a huge plus point.
Shopping Tip: chinatown
