My husband and I had such a lovely time, we had plans to go sight seeing but the hotel was so lowly and had such great resturants that we spent the majority of our time at the pool or at dinners there. Wonderful food, great staff .. We are already talking about going back!

Colonnial grandieur, patchy sevice

When you arrive at the GFH you really feel as your at the centre of Columbo's priviledged society. There seems to be a constant stream of weddings making its way through the foyer and a mele of staff running around. The Regency wing has been beautifully and expensively renovated in a way that harks back to the Colonnial original. The catering facilities in the hotel are less impressive however. The only place not doing a buffet and not fine dining i.e. suitable for a family with young children was the bar. The menu was very limited and the service awful - by some margin the worst we experienced in SL. The waiters were surly, would walk off mid order, and it was nothing to wait 25 mins for a bottled beer. Shame, as the owners have clearly invested heavily in the infrastructure of the hotel.

Good Location but tardy rooms

Location is the best in Columbo as were the rooms back in 1890!
Request a room in the renovated block they sound much nicer than the noisy dusty ones we had on both stays. Neverthless it has old colonial charm and well worth a visit. Restaurants are great.

Some confusion about the type of room we were eligible for, there should have been more detailed information provided for clarity and to avoid misunderstanding. The initial reception person who met us was arrogant and unhelpful. After asking us to wait while he got the room ready, we returned to be told by another person that the room had been given up to someone else! The first guy was there but he kept quiet and ignored us. Luckily a Jamal helped us out of this unpleasant situation.

Classic Colonial Colombo

We couldn't get a room in the new wing so stayed over Christmas in a Royal Suite in the Classic Wing. The suite was huge and full of historic furniture. Lovely to sit outside on the hotel terrace and watch the sunset.
Only downsides were no Balcony (there are only a few in the hotel), not a very good shower and the noise from wedding receptions two floors below.

hotel doesn t worth the price for old room

this hotel is nice with a great view and wnderful food (breakfast and lunch/dinner), but we got a very old room, I think the room definitely doesn't worth the price.
just because of this room (the room was very noisy, no hot water...) It was the worth choice of our sri lanka trip.
==> I don't recommend this hotel with this kind of room ( check also on the hotel website directly since they can propose cheaper price than Agoda)

Lovely rooms in the regency wing. Modest size though stylish & comfortable.
We really enjoyed the breakfasts & the kids loved the pool.
Drinks at the end of the day, watching the setting sun, is an absolute highlight.
Shopping Tip:
A visit to Odel for shopping was well worth it.

Faded grandeur - a bit too faded!

The location of the Galle Face is wonderful and I prefer to stay somewhere with a bit of history. However, I am not sure how they justify the prices they charge as the common areas in the hotel are quite run down and the service is bordering on mediocre.
On arrival I was told that the category of room I had paid for (in the Regency Wing) wasn't available as the roof was leaking and that the only remaining room was in the cheaper, original building. Their explanation was pretty unconvincing and the room I was placed in was really grotty - shockingly bad for the prices they charge for this category. I was assured that I would be moved first thing the next morning and as it was gone 2am I didn't make too much of a fuss. I didn't have the energy.
The next morning I was moved into the Regency wing and it was far superior. Almost like being in a different hotel. I would have demanded a refund and checked out if I'd had to spend another night in the original building. It was that bad.
The food at the Galle Face was OK. The buffet breakfast was adequate, but doesn't stand up well to the quality at similarly priced hotels in Asia (for example, the cooked food wasn't hot). The staff all seemed slightly fed up. They weren't surly, exactly, but they weren't that interested in going out of their way to help either.
Whilst I enjoyed my stay, it was mostly because I loved the location and thought Colombo was a fantastic city. I was somewhat underwhelmed by the Galle Face. It wasn't dreadful, but the abiding feeling was of staying somewhere adequate that is resting on its laurels and trading on it's colonial name. This could be an amazing hotel with a refurbishment and a bit more care on the part of both management and staff.

Great seaview, old historic ancient design hotel with attractive unique building design. Rooms at renovated block are of clean but old block rooms are in urgent need of upgrading renovation. Notice hotel owner not giving serious consideration with cost factors in mind with the style and type of temporary materials they used in some of their renovation seemingly not matching to the old ancient uniqueness of its ancient old century plus construction which is its great attraction. Room rates of the renovated room on the high side so would not be returning as there are several other seaview hotels with greater choice of facilities at much reasonable room rates.
