This hotels is in very nice location in Colombo, if like to see Colombo port and this hotel is one of heritage building from British era. Rooms are pretty big but all most all facilities are not working.Electrical connection,Internet, phone line, floor and room condition are extremely bad if you compare the value of money. The air condition, bed and other facilities are no more.
The health spa is good and food restaurant and bar is excellent.
So anybody has very short stay for outside job this hotel is ok for them.

A beautifull colonial hotel with old world charm.
This is not a swanky new hotel, nor does the room rate reflect that, however if you are looking for a beautifull colonial hotel with old world charm located in a central location then this is the hotel to choose.
Do not miss having a long drink on the restaurant terrace ovelooking the port prior to a reasonable dining experience and be sure to look around the reception hall at the pictures and exhibits from a bygone era.

SIM based interenet connect package offered by the hotel is the only advantage i could see in this hotel

Staff pretend polite and caring but in fact they are careless and show 0 efficiency. The rooms and the room services are not a hotel level or style and it need a radical changes to achieve low star hotel level.

The hotel is very centrally located but its problem lies the very central part of Colommbo (Fort) is absolutely soulless in the evenings dueto high security in the apporaches. During the day it is a great place for walks to Galle Fort Face or markets/station area. Breakfast is ok as you have great view to enjoy. Room is very dated. Hot water shower switch is outside the bathroom - note to switch it on as the water is cold (cool) otherwise.
Nightlife Tip:
Galle Face hotel for sundowner and walk along the "green".

Nice location with few minutes away from Trade Center and Peta Bazar.

The stay was overall good. Hotel is looking old as it is in reality. The staff are extremely helpful and a great asset to the hotel. I enjoyed my dining experience at the Harbor restaurant overlooking the Colombo Port.
Hotel is little far from popular shopping complexes such as House of Fasion, Odel, & MC. The room was old looking but was kept clean throughout.
Shopping Tip:
Electronics items at the Peta Bazar are extremely cheap.

This overpriced hotel thinks it is still an exclusive hotspot. The glory is gone, when we came in our room there was a leaking problem that could not be solved, also there was a dirty diaper in the bathroom... In the restaurant I had to sent the same 'medium' steak back to the kitchen twice because it was still rare, the third time I told the waiter he could keep it there.

Old but Friendly
The hotel is well known and easy to access. Located close to the train and bus stations. The area is very safe as the army is stationed next to the hotel. The staff is very polite and diligent. When you have a problem do not hesitate to talk with the staff: they will try to find a way to help you.

I arrived very late from the airport and realized that the hotel had forgotten to keep a room for me. I was told that for one night I would be put in one big room and that I could change room the next day. The room I had for the first night was not very clean, very noisy with a very old equipment. The next morning I had a good breakfast in the large dining room that has a vieu on Colombo harbor. The view is not very romantic as you see mainly cranes but that large dining room still has some charm. Breakfast is definitely a must in that hotel, serving a large variety of food. The service is excellent. For lunch and dinner, I recommend the restaurant on the ground floor where quite good Sri Lankan is servent for a very reasonable price. Here too the staff is very nice. After strong rains I had to change room again because water was dripping in my room. Thus, in a week I had to change rooms twice and realized that most of the rooms are equiped with the same furniture and that something in the room is always broken. This said, rooms are very clean and the room service is excellent. Pillows smell a little humidity and the matress are quite old. The hotel is in an area that has very little touristic interest, except for the chaotic bus and train stations and the market around that station. However, you will find outside the hotel plenty of means of transportation to take you in town. The hotel has also a travel agency that can accomodate most of your needs for a reasonable price.

Fine establishment
Very friendly, helpful, well presented staff. Greeted me with delicious complimentary drink.
Breakfast was magnificent and with great views over the harbour.

I arrived direct from the airport and was greeted by very friendly helpful staff who even brought me a surprise complimentary drink - just what I needed right then! My room was spacious and entirely adequate for my needs (although perhaps the TV could do with a clearer picture - not that you're probably visiting Sri Lanka for the television!). I was spoilt for choice the two mornings I had breakfast & enjoyed my meals with splendid views over the harbour. Also the 'nightclub' downstairs was ok on the Saturday night, fine to chill and relax with a drink and a boogie with the locals. Plus given the good location for buses and trains I would definitely recommend the Grand Oriental Hotel.
Hotel Feature Tip:
This hotel also seems to be a popular venue for Sri Lankan wedding parties, welcome home parties etc so I got to taste a little culture also as the locals turned laid on Kanyan drummers etc.
