Taipei

Taipei is the epitome of Asian success. It has everything vacationers are after, from charming colonial districts and historic temples to magnificent green spaces and a hip, cosmopolitan edge. Taipei – Chiang Kai Shek International Airport is a major Asian gateway, serving a range of hotels near Taipei.

Taipei manages to capitalize both on its detachment from and its connection to mainland China. It began as a trading port, later headquartered the Qing Dynasty and finally became an oasis of exiled Nationalist Party members who arrived during the communist uprising. Tourists divide their time between marvelous attractions like the National Palace Museum, part of a collection that originated in Beijing, and soaring sites like Taipei 101, which was until recently the tallest building in the world. In between are a wealth of temples, memorials and traditional markets all worth exploring. Datong district's Japanese architecture and street markets make it a great place for visitors, as well.

The commercial capital of Taipei is Da-an district, where hotel guests have access to a lively spread of department stores, restaurants and bars. This is where the best street markets are found, including venues that specialize in jade, flowers and electronics. The university and expatriate communities found here contribute to a fresh, international atmosphere.

Ximending is another of Taipei’s commercial giants, and many of its boutiques, galleries and art-house cinemas are kept in buildings dating back to the 1930s. Accommodation in Taipei comes in all categories, with budget hostels next to the kind of franchise giants seen around the world.

Taipei is riddled with forest preserves, some found inside the metropolitan area. The city is cut by twin rivers and funneled into a basin surrounded by steep cliffs. This combined with the city’s cosmopolitan edge makes it one of the most livable (and needless to say, visit-able) cities in the world.
