Great location but old and dated rooms

The hotel is at a great location which is within walking distance to Sogo shopping mall as well as the subway station, which is why we decided to stay here in the first place. Major touristy spots such as Xilin night market and Taipei 101 is also within 10-15 minutes taxi ride away.
The staff at the hotel are all very friendly and helpful, especially those at the concierge that will recommend what nice food are there around the area and even make reservations for you.
The only drawback is that the rooms look old and the breakfast was pretty poor.

fairly good sized rooms, great location - 1 block from sogo (5 minute walk)
like the larger hotel feel, more services/amenities
requested early checkin and room was available upon very early arrival - big plus/bonus!
service was efficient and friendly all around
wifi in the rooms is a bit spotty/slow - as with many hotels in taipei
bathrooms are dated, but not a huge deal for us

I booked this hotel because it was listed as "5 stars" and says "free wifi". When I checked in I was pleased with the lobby area because it has a nice shopping area and restaurants. The room was very loud and definitely could use updating. There was mold around the window and in the bathroom. The bathroom showed the most aging because of the mold and dirty tile. The size would be manageable as long as it were clean. The staff was also not helpful at all with our booking. Definitely not a "5 star" hotel. It is comparable to a Motel 6.

Generally I'm happy with the location, it is within 5-10min walking distance from nearest MRT.
The overall condition of the hotel is well maintained.
My single largest concern is that the hotel does not provide free WiFi access in the room. Free WiFi access is so critical to business traveler and it has became standard offering in most other business boutique hotel.

Howard Plaza Hotel is situated in a eastern district of Taipei. It is very near to the commercial and shopping districts area and it is well-linked to all forms of transportation - cabs, buses and metros and makes travelling an ease, be it for work or entertainment.
