Da-an District
Da-an is a largely residential district in downtown Taipei. The three major universities in this district mean that visitors can enjoy a range of regularly scheduled cultural programs. Accommodation in Da-an District is especially well-suited for visitors who appreciate specialty markets, galleries and a diverse dining scene.
Covering 26 hectares of the central commercial district is Da-an Park, with its lightly landscaped gardens, walkways and lotus pond. Several pavilions here attract groups and families, while the onsite amphitheater occasionally hosts special events. The early morning is the best time to visit the park, as locals are out in force exercising and practicing Tai chi. The park’s café opens early and closes late.
The hotels in Da-an District are situated close to major shopping areas. Da-an has three branches of Sogo Department Store alone, and there are many other boutiques and shopping complexes in the area. On the weekends, a flower market and jade market convene, while the local electronics market is on every day of the week. For tourists, the best place to pick up souvenirs and browse local products is at Tonghua Night Market, which lies to the east of the district.
On the opposite side of the district is Shilin Night Market, which is tied up in the university scene. Students come to shop and hang out, and local bars are some of the liveliest in Taipei. There are several international restaurants in this area, so it attracts tourists and expatriates as well.
The most direct way into Da-an District is on the MRT via Zhongxiao Fuxing Station. Passengers alight in the north of the district and can easily walk to most hotels and attractions from here.
