Mandarin Oriental Hotel Bangkok Info
One of Mandarin Oriental's flagship properties: Mandarin Oriental Hotel, has been a favorite of the elite since 1876. In 2006, the grand dame of the Chao Phraya River underwent a face-lift. The new spa is known as one of the best in the world and the facilities have been updated to include: a large gym, tennis, squash, and two outdoor swimming pools. All of the 393 fresh rooms are assigned with personal butlers. Visitors should not miss high-tea in the Author’s Wing, a meal at one of the eight famous restaurants, taking a class in Thai cooking/culture, or watching the sunset from the Veranda. Wireless internet, business center, meeting rooms, secretarial and concierge services, make for an efficient as well as luxurious experience. A proprietary boat shuttles patrons 5-mins to the sky train as well as sights along the river. A stay at the opulent Mandarin Oriental never disappoints, and has you wanting to come back.

Food, Drink and Entertainment
You’re spoilt for choice as far as eating is concerned during your stay at The Oriental, Bangkok. There are nine venues to choose from, offering a wide range of international cuisine.
Le Normandie Connoisseurs from all over South-East Asia flock to Le Normandie for its splendid cuisine, impeccable service, elegant ambiance and the wines from its exceptional cellar. Situated in the Garden Wing of The Oriental, Bangkok, its full a la carte French menu specialises in exemplary seafood and meat dishes, although there’s always an alternative but no less exquisite set menu, both at lunchtime and dinner.
Set lunch, 12.00 – 14.00 hrs (except Sunday) A la carte/set dinner, 19:00 - 22.00 hrs
Lord Jim’s Named after the seafaring hero created by the novelist Joseph Conrad, Lord Jim’s reputation for magnificent seafood is almost as well-travelled as its namesake. It is renowned world wide, particularly for its sushi and sashimi dishes that are often to be seen in our buffet lunches and a la carte dinner menu.
International buffet lunch, 12.00 – 14.00 hrs on weekdays and 11.00 – 14.00 hrs on Sunday
A la carte/set dinner, 19:00 - 22.00 hrs
Sala Rim Naam Housed in a richly decorated Thai pavilion, originating from Northern Thailand, the restaurant is also the setting for one of the kingdom’s unique cultural experiences - classical Thai dancing, performed before your table every night. It’s the perfect accompaniment to such lavish cuisine.
Thai buffet lunch, 12.00 – 14.00 hrs
Thai set dinner with cultural show, 19.00 – 22.00 hrs
China House Located just outside the hotel, the China House is a colonial style house transformed into a first class Chinese restaurant. It specialises in Cantonese food, but with additional dishes from other regions such as Szechuan, Shanghai and Chiu Chow. The China House also offers a daily Dim Sum lunch, together with its a la carte menu.
A la carte and Dim Sum lunch, 11.30 – 14.00 hrs
A la carte Thai dinner, 18:30 - 22:00 hrs
Terrace Rim Naam The Barbeque dinner buffet served at the Riverside Terrace has one of the best selections of grilled seafood and meat dishes imaginable, including everything from kebabs to Chinese noodles. It is one of the very few large terraces of its kind in Bangkok, and is wonderful for enjoying the cooler nights by the river.
A la carte Thai dinner, 17.00 – 22.00 hrs
The Verandah The Verandah offers new levels of all-day dining featuring a wide variety of Asian and Western dishes, all served in elegant contemporary Thai surroundings either indoors or outdoors on the banks of the Chao Phraya river.
A la carte menú, 06.00 – 24.00 hrs
Ciao This restaurant is nestled beside the lush tropical gardens of the Authors' Lounge. Take your seat outside on its marble terrace and you can dine on the finest Italian fare, including the tastiest pizzas made in our own wood-fired oven and a variety of home-made pasta. To accompany it, choose from the freshest salads, with the sweetest ice creams to follow.
A la carte menu, 17.00 – 22.00 hrs
The Authors' Lounge On the ground floor of the Authors’ Wing, this lounge has old colonial charm and is decorated with white rattan furniture. It is considered to be an institution for traditional afternoon tea with scones, finger sandwiches and cakes and of course only the worlds finest teas (or coffee).
The Bamboo Bar This Bar is a Bangkok legend. It’s renowned for its live jazz, and features internationally acclaimed singers in its programme. The atmosphere is wild yet sophisticated, set against an appropriate backdrop of jungle décor.
Maeyanang Dinner Cruise Step aboard the“Maeyanang” rice barge for an unforgettable evening filled with dazzling images of river life, starlit temples and monuments. It all begins when cocktails are served, followed by a Thai buffet style dinner. The boat is constructed of golden teakwood, with traditional Northern Thai style wooden dining tables and chairs, and is the perfect romantic setting from which to experience the beauty of the River of Kings.
Thai set dinner, 19.00 – 22.00 hrs

personal attention, absolute friendliness, caring and efficiency
After our visit to the Mandarin Oriental 2 years ago I wrote the following review. Now we were there for a week and found that although the management had changed everything else had remained just as convincing and charming as ever:
The claim to "make you feel at home" does not quite describe the Oriental’s main feature. What they actually do achieve is this: They give you a feeling of what the ideal home could be like. The personal care and appreciation one receives in the Oriental not just as a guest but as an individual is second to none.
I can‘t think of any cons, except that people who are not sensitive to friendliness and personal attention should avoid the hotel. The following incident illustrates what I mean: Upon arrival at the Oriental, guests are greeted by welcoming personnell and presented a flower chain. One day I observed a man climbing out of the taxi, pushing the welcoming girl aside and slapping her hand as she attempted to give him the flower chain.
There are many luxury hotels in the world and quite a few in Bangkok. Some might even be more luxurious with respect to interior decoration, furnishings, room facilities etc. than the Oriental. True luxury, however, does not come in the form of flat screen television sets, in-room whirlpools and the like (the rooms in the Oriental, by the way, are equipped with everything the discriminating traveller needs and designed in good taste and style) but is provided by caring and efficient personal attention. In the Oriental, your wishes are being fulfilled almost before you even know that you had them.
Of course, part of the charme and spirit of the place lies in its history, but the secret of making you feel so extremely comfortable is the degree of friendliness and efficiency of the entire staff and the fact that you enjoy it not as an anonymous guest but as an appreciated individual with a name and a personal identity.
And they do not just try their best like in so many other hotel where there is no la

Location on Chao Phraya River,
Excellent service,
History of the property,
Junk boat shuttle
No free internet access,
Disappointing Thai food
This is a great hotel. The service received by my wife and I was just superb. Lots of great little touches- fragrant flower bracelet chains on arrival, fresh fruit every day (and different), morning papers in internal hutch, and so forth. A great experience. If I have to be critical, I would have to say the Thai food at the Verandah was just ordinary. However, to eat here at night was just magical as were the cocktails at the bar. Also I was surprised that on leaving the bellboy was negotiating a higher non-meter price with the taxi- the taxi driver was disappointed that I insisted on having the meter on. Despite that, all in all a great stay!
Travel tip : Make sure to take the hotel junkboat shuttle

The warmth of the welcome and the gracious service laced with true caring melts the heart. Everyone jumps to help and solve every problem one encounters.
I cannot imagine anyone finding any fault with this hotel.
The warmth and graciousness of the welcome at the airport is the begining of a restful, luxurious break at this beautiful hotel. Every need is anticipated and tended to. Even unexpected medical emergencies were handled with the utmost care and efficiency. The staff never wavered in their patience and caring in making sure everyone involved was kept in touch and catered to. The patient got prompt medical care, the spouse support keeping in touch with the hospital and ongoing friends the update on the situation. In another emergency with a passport issue, the staff at the airport booked another flight and wisked the clients to the embassy to fix the passport problem right away. They were able to catch the flight the next day to carry on with their onward Asian tour.
The Oriental has won the loyalty of all its clients with service that goes above the call of duty.
