Chatuchak

Chatuchak adjoins Bangkok’s most important districts, and it has a few commercial attractions worth exploring. Chatuchak’s Mo Chit bus terminal is the gate of entry for overland travelers from the north of Thailand, so it’s convenient to explore Chatuchak on the first or last day of a visit to Bangkok. Visitors based within the Chatuchak area can get to Mo Chit bus terminal via bus, underground train, skytrain (BTS) or taxi.

The main attraction here is Chatuchak Weekend Market – commonly referred to as 'JJ' – within walking distance of Mo Chit BTS station and the MRT stations Khamphaeng Phet and Chatuchak. This sprawling covered market literally deals in everything shoppers could want, from antiques and handicrafts to fashion, furniture and exotic pets. JJ is hot and chaotic, but an essential Bangkok experience.

While the weekend market is the main attraction for tourists in this part of town, there are quite a few other shopping areas frequented mainly by locals and therefore very affordable. Phayon Yothin BTS has direct access to Union Mall, where fashionable teens find bargains on clothes and accessories. BTS Saphan Kwai is close to merchants who specialize in antiques and jewelry. There’s also a great retro night bazaar near Huay Kwang that deals in vintage goods and has a fantastic display of muscle cars and Vespas. The major modern shopping complexes here are Central Lad Phrao and Centre One.

Accommodation in Chatuchak is cheaper than in neighboring districts. Guests of this area are outside the major tourist centers, but can connect to all of Bangkok via public transport. The Chatuchak area includes Lad Phrao, an area with international schools and high-density apartment living for both locals and expats.
