China Town

China Town adjoins the most important sightseeing district in Bangkok. Tourists don’t have to travel far to see major attractions like the Grand Palace, especially if they’ve booked accommodation in China Town along Yaowarat Road or its side streets. The entire district is contained south of Rattanakosin and west of Silom.

There are a few shopping centers in China Town, but the traditional markets are more exciting. Merchants sell colorful silk, herbal medicine, gold, gems and a host of souvenirs. It’s a great place to stroll in the evening, with Thai and Chinese temples like Wat Thep Sirin, Wat Ratchabophit and Wat Kuang Khae in the background. China Town is also a great place to go for an inexpensive meal. Restaurants and food stalls line the busy side streets. Cantonese food is especially popular, with shark fin soup and fresh seafood in abundance.

When visitors come to China Town they usually stop by Little India – Pahurat. The markets here on Sampleng Lane and Chakraphek Road are more compact and a little livelier than those in China Town.

The closest train stop to China Town is Hua Lamphong, Bangkok's main train terminal with long distance overland services as well as underground metro connections. From Hua Lamphong it's a short cab ride to Yaowarat Road. While China Town isn't the most convenient place to stay for travelers who want to spend a lot of time around Sukhumvit, it is close to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and to the backpackers paradise of Khao San Road. The accommodation is also a lot cheaper here than in the Sathorn and Silom areas. The Chao Phraya River Express is the quickest way in from neighboring riverside communities.
