Khaosan / Grand Palace

This is Bangkok’s most popular tourism district. It is home to two of the country’s biggest attractions as well as a lively hotel and entertainment district. When tourists head to Bangkok for pleasure rather than business, this is where they spend a good proportion of their time.

Khaosan Road is an important budget accommodation district the east bank of the Chao Phraya River. The number of budget hotels on Khaosan Road has made this one of the world’s leading backpacker destinations. The street is lined with cheap cafés, no-frills bars, trendy clubs and rows of merchants selling tee-shirts, knockoffs and souvenirs.

Staying in the Khaosan area means visitors have access to a variety of restaurants and an exciting nightlife, but it also puts them in the perfect position for sightseeing. South of Khaosan Road is the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, hallmarks of any visit to Thailand.

Wat Pho is further south along the river. Other sites in the area include Democracy Monument, the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall and Dusit Zoo. Wat Pho, the oldest temple in Bangkok that houses the largest indoor reclining Buddha is also in the area. All of these are easily reached by taxi or even on foot – an especially nice experience in the cool season.

Accommodation near Khaosan Road and the Grand Palace is close enough to the river to use ferries and canal boats as a means of transportation. The Chao Phraya River Express and the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat both stop by Tha Prachan and Phra Athit piers. Buses, taxis and canal ferries can be used for getting around the area.
