I have stayed at the Royal Hotel frequently over the past 20 years. It's an established place, not fancy and has been renovated. It has always done the trick but this is the last time I will stay there. The Dragon Lady at the desk is main reason. Very unfriendly and not interested in being of assistance. This, combined with the cons above have pushed me out of the Royal. There are better places in Bangkok for the same price.

Good rates, good location, decent breakfast, swimming pool

Staff unfriendly, taxi drivers lurking at the entrance; uncomfortable bed

  • Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : in walking distance from the amulet market

Whilst there is no doubting this is a cheap hotel in a reasonable location, it is not cheap enough to warrant the poor service (staff non repsonsive - more interested in standing round chatting), the run down facilities (threadbare sheets, not sure they were clean, outdates pool) and of course the large rat running around the coffee shop. The transport service run from the foyer of the hotel is also a major rip off - the advertised prices for taxis etc is at least 3 times what the meter price would be - DO NOT USE them. Also beware the jewel scam - the temple is closed this morning, but we can take you for a tour round town - which of course is a tour of jewellery shops where the driver gets fuel vouchers if you buy someting!

Close to Khao San Rd, river and Emerald Buhda, Cheap

Rude Staff, tacky rooms, rundown facilities (pool, beds etc). RATS. Also difficult to access due to massive intersection out front.

  • Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : A short walk away is the river - a ride on the express ferry is well worth the 17 Baht!

If you only have a day and night in Bangkok, this might be a good place to stay if you want to see some of the top sights. You don't need to worry about all the hassle of taxis or tuktuks. Just walk. It's all in a day's walk. The National museum is amazing!it's fairly easy to get to and from the airport by public taxi, meter running, including airport tax, shouldn't cost more than 350Bht.I would recomend this hotel if you are happy with fairly tired, but clean rooms.ask for a room on the pool side;away from the road. They are quiet and perfectly adequate for a short stay.

The location for a day trip, walking, round the main sights, is excellent. 5 Minutes to Khao San, which is worth a visit. Then a walk to The National Museum, the Grand Palace, a long boat trip through the klongs and a stop off at the royal barges, The Reclining Buddha and China town. All possible within a long day , if that's all you have in Bangkok.

Huge spaces in the hotel lobby, fab; the rest rather tired. The rooms are fine if fairly basic. Nice to be able to swim in a pool, though that too was rather tired. Lots of choice for breakfast, but not particularly good food.

  • Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Many attractions available on foot from this hotel.
