After a stay in a dark box room in a previous hotel, arriving to my spacious and bright superior room was a huge relief. Spotlessly clean, cool tiled floors and a chaise longue type thing that could easily sleep another person, I had a large bed and the room was decorated well. The staff have been fantastic, friendly and doing everything from lugging over a fan everytime I went to the garden to have a cigarette to helping me with my Thai! The pool area is gorgeous and you wouldn't believe in a million years that somewhere so peaceful could be situated so close to the city. No noise in the daytime and total peace and quiet every night of my stay. Delighted that I decided on The Chang Puak - will definitely return!

Unique Layout - Nice People

A mix of western comfort and traditional Thai. This was my first stop in Thailand and there was some culture shock compared to what I imagine staying in a large western-style chain hotel would have been like. There is no bath tub and the water from the shower runs out onto the bathroom floor and into a drain in traditional Thai style. Also, the beds were quite hard by western standards, though personally I like that. The staff was very nice and overall I had a very nice stay. In fact, the hotel was completely booked though it might be a little rough for some. There is no elevator so be prepared to walk up and down up to three floors. The AC was fine. The WiFi went out occasionally.
One unusual aspect is that the front desk is actually outdoors under an overhanging roof. You can have lunch on that patio or in the neighboring garden, though you might experience bugs in the garden.
Nightlife Tip:
Most of the nightlife is in old city or outside the western wall. The hotel is north of the city so be prepared to hail a taxi or else take a 15-30 minute walk.

very enjoyable stay
Good location, great staff and lovely pool

This hotel is old and the rooms a little tatty. However, they are clean and just what you need in regards to a bed to sleep in and a clean shower to use. The pool area is lovely and the location of the hotel is great around a 5 minute walk from the northern old city walls. Overall for the baht we paid per night we thought it was very good value.
