Peaceful hotel. Good service, especially the young man at the reception. Location is a little bit far away from the main street. Clean and tidy rooms. The staff is polite and frendly.
However there wasn't a safetybox neither swimmingpool as informed. Internet didn't work either very well.

Luxurious place, bad location, poor service
5
Chiang Saen River Hill Hotel is a rarity in Chiang Saen. It's a luxurious place in the humdrum of Chiang Saen situated beside the Mekong; the city itself is enclosed by brickwalls which reminded me of in Spain - and Chiang Mae. The problem is its location. Though a mere block from the south gate of the "city", it is very far from the town's main drag and is an uncomfortable walk on a December day, amidst feral dogs. Imagine that in summer. My room, a huge beautifully furnished and elegantly styled one, is spotless. Had sophisticated interiors, ref, AC, cable TV that had English channels, tasteful local art, clean and dry shower room. The lobby is as tasteful and homey.
The main problem is its lack of manpower. I arrived, presented my booking & they were surprised! It's odd not expecting booked guests, especially when a mark at the lobby welcomes marco polo and guests. No one will usher you to your room, an oddity since the least they can do is guide you through your room and their facilities like the previous 12 hotels I stayed within my 2 weeks. That's ridiculous. Bad reviews reflect about the capacity of the place to accommodate and welcome their paying guests. At any single time, there's just 2-3 people running a hotel packed with (mostly) guests arriving in bus loads. I say, if it's too much for you to handle, get more people to help out.If it overwhelms you, don't stay in the hotel business.
It's a great place with one of the worst service I've ever encountered in my 12-hotel travels during this leg of travel. It's too far from the center. The staff even when not deluged by the needs of its guests just walk around in a daze. Worst place really. For the money I paid to stay here, I'd rather stay in less affluent guesthouses than have a luxurious rooms with no people running a place. Stay away.
Travel tip:
Chiang Saen is a marvel. It's a walled city like Chiang Mae. It has several worn down relics and temples, adequately marked in English & can be seen on foot. There are so many feral dogs though so be careful. I walked with a bamboo stick to ward them away. CS is langorous much like other Mekong-side towns in Laos. It's a 14 km bike ride to the Golden Triangle. Get a bike. Local transport will ask for 300-400 baht for a 1-hour return, which is highway robbery considering the distance. Food in CS is mostly a bit more expensive, with less choices, also less appetizing. By 4PM, mats are splayed by the riverside where a meal could be had - expensive for the limited options and quality. But the people are welcoming, and temples abound. Don't miss Wat Phu near the Museum and West gate.

Very nice!
Great value, hallways felt a bit scary, room was great.

This place was ideal. Definitely rent a motorbike at the rental place in town. Great for getting to/from the hotel and using the hotel as a base camp for motor bike treks to the Golden Triangle or around various temples in the area. The hotel will safely store your bike in their garage overnight too. Great times in Chiang Saen.
