Lonely Beach / Bai Lan Bay
Lonely Beach and Bai Lan Bay are located on the southern reaches of the Koh Chang’s west coast. The beach’s name comes from the old backpacker days of Koh Chang, when relatively few travelers made it this far south. Hotels in Lonely Beach and Bai Lan Bay are still relatively secluded, though life has gotten busier here in the past few years.
Lonely Beach is still a favorite hangout with backpackers, and most of the local accommodation is inexpensive. Restaurants in this area are also highly affordable, with rustic beach bars and seafood restaurants lining the main beach road. Given the fact that most of the hotels in Lonely Beach are booked by younger travelers, the local nightlife is energetic and features plenty of dancing, with nightly fire shows in the high season.
Bai Lan Bay joins Lonely Beach on this part of the island, with a 20-minute walk separating the two. The sand at Bai Lan Bay isn’t as powdery-white as it elsewhere on Koh Chang, so there hasn’t been as much development here. All the same, there are still a few quiet and comfortable resorts at Bai Lan Bay with all-inclusive amenities.
The road that follows the west coast extends farther south than Lonely Beach, but this is about as far south as passengers can expect to take a shared pick-up truck from the pier. The only other way of getting back and forth is renting a motorbike or chartering a long-tail boat.
