unfortunately underwhelming

we arrived at baan manali after a wonderful stay at a different hotel on koh phangan where we received excellent treatment and were underwhelmed to say the least. the owners (French and Israeli) are quite indifferent and not very friendly. the sea is merely a pond where you can't really bathe. the bungalow is clean-ish, but not spotless. for the same price you can find much better bungalows/hotels/resorts on the nearby beaches.

A private beach in a central location
Everything is new; attentive staff; good food that you can eat while looking at the sunset.
9.7
This is a brand new French/Israeli-owned resort on a quiet location right on the beach. They started building it just 4 years ago, so everything looks new. There's a restaurant in the hotel with a rich menu, and there are a few nice places at a walking distance, such as The Masons Arms English pub, where you can eat great food and hang out at night.

Rustic beach hotel
Right on the water, 15 minute walk into town
6.7
this hotel is very rustic - a bit like camping out on the beach. the little bungalows are very basic - a bed, small bathroom and that's about it. no phones, no cell service, no tv (they do have wifi) so you really are away from it all. it's close to the water and among the trees, so there are lots of mosquitoes, even at night. there are lots of friendly dogs and cats wandering around, like all of koh phangan. if you like camping out, you will like this place.

beautiful location!
it's all about location with this place, perfect for relaxation, and only a ten minute walk from mian street

I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a quality peaceful stay, the couple who run the place are really nice and warm, and the food is special! but....I find some corners are cut, the bungalows have no fridge (you will realise the importance of a fridge when you've been here a while), no TV(not really a big deal), the cleaners do not clean unless u ask, I may be a little fussy here but anywhere I have stayed in Thailand you are always given complimentary water each day, here they do not. Overall the place is great, but it could be much better.
Restaurant Tip:
There is a night food market everyday on the main street, ten mins walk and impossible to miss, the food is beautiful and extremely cheap! Its a must..

All Good...
Rooms are quality and clean. Great setting and good food.
9.7
2nd time i have stayed at baan manali and it was still as good as my first visit. the setting is very peaceful and even though the beach is not the best it is very quiet and has amazing sunsets.
the couple that own it are very friendly and helpful without being too imposing. the breakfast was good as were the thai dishes we tried. they do some great healthy juices as well that are a must try.
would definitely recommend!

i loved baan manali - but please don't tell anyone else as it should remain a 'best kept secret'. if you want to keep away from the craziness of haad rin and the full moon parties, then the location is perfect.
the bungalows are great, clean, air con and tasteful. slap bang in between high-end luxury and back pack basic. lovely rooms with beautiful garden surroundings, my bungalow had the 'open the curtains in the morning to the see the sea' wow factor.
travelling alone, i was happy to eat on site every night and the food was good. a quiet enough place not to feel self conscious and to chat with people if you wished.
can't say enough good things about the young family in charge - kind, relaxed and very thoughtful.
great location from the harbour and the town of thong sala - a pleasant 20 mins walk to banks, shopping and restaurants.
set on a small stretch of beach, which felt delightfully private. i was happy to just hang out there and read all day. i'll say again, very relaxed, so if you're a high maintenance kind of person, or looking for action, go to a bigger resort. you can hire a kayak to pootle about and visit a small nearby island - the owner gives sailing lessons too.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
I did an afternoon Thai cooking course - booked via this resort - fab, like being in home economics again.
Also a day trip to ride and elephant (they seemed well treated), climb to a waterfall and snorkel at another beach (undersea visibilty bad in Dec/Jan so not much to see snorkel-wise)
Both of these pick up from Baan Manali.
If you're looking for Yoga I recommend the Monte Vista Retreat which had open morning sessions a steep walk away.
Thai boxers? A training camp is right next door - aparrently it's well known.

Nice owners
Good location, private beach, nice view
6
A.c is weak, room is very moist.
They don't clean the rooms every day.
Poor breakfast.
Pathway dark at night (after rain puddle that u can't see)
Many Mosquitos at day and night, and inside room!
when we asked towels for the beach we were told that they don't have. I asked for extra towels like in the room, but they said it is only for the room.
No tv.
Lack of electricity plug in room.
Nice owner, great location, good potential but seems like very little wish.

Nice and quiet experience
8
It's a very nice and scenic resort on the beach. The bungalows were nice and relaxing. We were in town for the Full Moon Party and wanted to stay away from all the action after it was over. This resort is quite far from Haad Rin (where the Full Moon Party is) so be prepared to take a 30-40 min tuk tuk ride over if that's what you're looking into. If you want a nice, quiet, relaxing stay then this is the place. Had quite a good experience there and the staff was quite nice.
