Koh Phangan (Samui)
This small island off the Gulf of Thailand has a lot to recommend it: lovely unspoiled beaches, amazing mountain trails and, of course, full moon parties. As is the case with most Thai islands, accommodation on Koh Phangan varies from five-star resorts to rustic beach bungalows – most properties positioned amid fine white sands and coconut trees with immediate access to turquoise waters.
Koh Phangan has several major beaches: Haad Rin, Haad Yuan, Thong Sala, Haad Yao, Haad Salad, Chaloklum and Thong Nai Pan Beach. The most famous beach on the island is the southernmost Haad Rin, where the full moon parties take place. As a result, once a month Haad Rin caters mainly for party attendees and the beach transforms into a lively melee of music, dancing and fire-twirling.
For travelers wanting a quieter holiday, beaches further north, such as Thong Sala and Chaloklum provide respite from crowds and still offer idyllic tropical beach conditions. There's plenty to do on the island aside from partying, including diving and snorkeling, fishing, hiking, Muay Thai and yoga. There's also an elephant camp on the island where visitors can ride – or just donate money to – the elephants. Given Koh Phangan's modest size, a day trip around the island is a good way for travelers to get their bearings – this can be done via hired motorcycle, jeep or, for an authentic Thai experience, songthaew.
Koh Phangan is served by ferry from Koh Samui and Surat Thani, with most travelers coming from Bangkok via Koh Samui Airport. The ferry drops passengers off at The Haad Rin Queen Ferry Pier.
