This postcard perfect beach was for many years known to just a select few, with its clear waters and unbelievably pristine, sandy beach. Those days are long gone now, and ever since “The Beach” was filmed here, this beautiful beach and the surrounding area has attracted a steady stream of sun-worshipping visitors, though to be fair, the beauty of Maya Beach and her neighbouring beaches remains undiminished.
One of three sheltered bays on Phi Phi Ley Island, within the Phi Phi National Marine Park, Maya Bay and the sandy, coconut-fringed beach are accessible only by boat. Thankfully there is no accommodation available on the island, and visitors are permitted only to visit as a day trip. The nearest hotel accommodation is Phi Phi Don, with literally hundreds of Thai hotels to choose from, catering to every budget. Those choosing a hotel in Phuket can also easily visit Maya Beach in a day.
Visiting Maya Beach is simply a case of choosing one of the many tour operators that make the short journey out to Phi Phi Ley daily, also visiting Bamboo Island ,and many other spots around the area. The waters here are teeming with fish, and a mask and snorkel is considered imperative, though to truly appreciate the wonders of Maya Bay’s marine-life, signing up for a scuba dive is highly recommended.
